Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Camille Whitfield

Before we dealt with Moreno, there was one piece of unfinished business that required surgical precision: Camille Whitfield.

While Daniel was scrambling in the underworld, Camille had attempted one final, pathetic smear campaign. She had scheduled an exclusive live television interview with the city’s premiere broadcast network, claiming that I had embezzled funds from our college alumni trust fund and seduced her husband while they were engaged.

She was live on the air at three in the afternoon.

Lorenzo and I sat in his private theater room, watching the broadcast on the massive high-definition screen.

“Isabella Vance was always jealous of my life,” Camille cried on camera, dabbing nonexistent tears with a lace handkerchief. “She couldn’t stand that Daniel chose me. She fabricated legal debts using forged documents with the help of underground figures to destroy our family business.”

The television host looked grave. “Those are serious accusations, Mrs. Marchetti. Do you have proof?”

“I have records of her bank transfers—” Camille began.

Suddenly, the studio’s feed glitched. The screen flickered, and the host’s microphone went dead.

On screen, a series of audio files began to play over the live broadcast. Lorenzo had not only hacked the network’s master feed through his tech operatives; he had routed the audio directly into the broadcast control room.

The first voice was unmistakable. It was Camille Whitfield, recorded eighteen months ago, laughing hysterically.

*“Of course Isabella doesn't suspect anything, Daniel. She’s an idiot. She spent four months drawing those waterfront blueprints. Once we get the city approval under your firm's name, you can dump her. My father will back the rest of the funding.”*

Then Daniel’s voice followed: *“What about her name on the copyright?”*

Camille’s cold laugh chilled the air: *“I went into her laptop last night and transferred the master files to an encrypted drive, then erased her cloud backups. She has nothing. She’s completely powerless.”*

The live television camera cut back to Camille in the studio.

Her face was frozen in sheer, unadulterated horror. Her eyes bulged. Her mouth fell open. The studio audience behind the glass began murmuring loudly.

The screen then displayed forensic bank statements, revealing that Camille had funneled nearly two million dollars from her father’s charity foundation into an offshore account in the Caymans to pay for her lavish wedding, couture gowns, and luxury vehicles.

The host stared at Camille in disgust. “Mrs. Marchetti… are these your recordings? Is this your voice?”

Camille stood up frantically, knocking her chair backward, and bolted off the set on live television, screaming at the production crew to cut the cameras.

I sat on the sofa, letting out a long, slow breath. The knot of betrayal that had sat in my chest for months dissolved into absolute nothingness.

Lorenzo reached over, his fingers wrapping around mine, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.

“One down,” he said quietly, his eyes dark with triumph. “One to go.”
