Chapter 55 - THE RETURN OF THE HEIR

The morning sun broke through the heavy English mist, casting golden rays across the rolling lawns and gothic spires of Ashford Hall. For the first time in thirty-five years, the estate felt unburdened, as if the suffocating shadow of treachery had finally been swept clean.
Sir Arthur stood beside me on the great stone terrace, looking out over the ancient oak forest that David had once walked.
"The decree is formally registered in London," Arthur said softly. "The sovereign trusts, the European shipping interests, and the Ashford estates are entirely yours, Alexander. You have reclaimed what your mother gave her life to protect."
Katherine approached us, carrying a warm trench coat, an apologetic yet hopeful look on her face. "I have submitted my resignation from the trust board, Alexander. I will leave the estate tonight."
I turned to her, studying the young woman who had risked everything to deliver the truth. "You stayed inside that vipers' nest to find justice for my mother, Katherine. Your father's sins are not yours. You will remain. You will help me rebuild this family as it should have been."
Tears glistened in Katherine’s eyes, and she bowed her head in profound gratitude. "Thank you, Lord Alexander."
Laurent walked up the terrace steps, his phone in hand, looking remarkably refreshed. "Flight back to New York is cleared for tomorrow, boss. The Vance Global board is waiting for your final signature to fully integrate the Elm Street properties into our community trust."
I smiled faintly, touching the signet ring on my finger. Evelyn Vance had sneered that I was only good for my wallet. Now, not only was Linwood safe, but David Vance’s rightful kingdom stood fully restored.
Suddenly, a junior butler rushed onto the terrace, breathing heavily, holding a sealed, silver-trimmed dispatch envelope.
"My Lord," the servant stammered. "A private courier just arrived at the front gate from Geneva. It was delivered directly from the vault of the Bank of International Settlements. It is marked urgent and confidential for the eyes of Eleanor’s son alone."
I frowned, taking the envelope. The paper was modern, but the red wax seal was stamped with a symbol that made my heart freeze in my chest.
It was not the Ashford crest.
It was the private family seal of Evelyn’s estranged father—a man David had told me died forty years ago before Evelyn was ever born.
My hands grew steady as I broke the wax and unfolded the handwritten note inside.
*Alexander,* the note read.
*Sterling was only a pawn. The conspiracy that took Eleanor was orchestrated from across the ocean. David knew this, and he hid the ultimate truth where you would least expect it. Look beneath your childhood bed on Elm Street. The war for your lineage did not end in London. It has only just begun.*

I stared at the letter as the wind whipped across the terrace, Laurent and Arthur watching my face turn to stone.
"Laurent," I whispered, my voice dark and deadly. "Fuel the jet. We’re going back to Elm Street."
