Chapter 53 - THE RECORDINGS IN THE VAULT

"Stay down!" Laurent roared, pulling his service weapon and activating the vehicle’s interior countermeasures. A dense curtain of tactical smoke erupted from the perimeter of our Range Rover, obscuring the vision of the attackers outside.

Through the smoked glass, I remained calm. The chaos, the deafening gunfire, the imminent threat of death—it did not provoke panic. It brought a crystalline, absolute clarity. I had survived Evelyn’s decade-long psychological torture. I had survived Julian’s hitmen in Zurich. Sterling’s thugs were merely the final barricade between me and my mother’s honor.

I reached for the satellite phone linked to Arthur’s command network. "Arthur, activate Protocol Falcon."

"Understood, Alexander," Arthur’s voice crackled through the static.

Five seconds later, the deep, rhythmic thrum of rotor blades tore through the cloud cover above the ridge. Two unmarked tactical helicopters bearing the crest of the British Metropolitan Counter-Terrorism Command descended from the fog, blinding floodlights washing over the ambushing SUVs.

Sirens echoed across the valley.

"This is British Special Operations! Drop your weapons and step away from the vehicles immediately!" a voice boomed over external megaphones.

The mercenaries on the road froze, looking up in sheer terror as armed tactical police rappelled down onto the road, disarming the ambushers within seconds.

Sir Arthur had not spent thirty years merely watching the Ashford legacy decay; he had cultivated the highest offices of the Crown, waiting for the rightful heir to strike.

Laurent breathed a heavy sigh, holstering his weapon and looking back at me with a rare grin. "David would have been proud of that timing, Alex."

"My father planned this thirty years ago, Laurent," I said, adjusting my tie. "He gave Arthur the authority to mobilize the Crown the moment Eleanor’s decree was unsealed. Now, let’s go finish Sterling."
