Chapter 45 - THE CIPHER ON THE HORIZON

Dawn broke over the mountains, painting the autumn sky in streaks of gold and lavender.
The morning newspapers had already hit the stands, their front pages dominated by screaming headlines: *VANCE PATRIARCH RISES FROM THE GRAVE: WIFE AND SON ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CONSPIRACY.* The stock market opened with our family companies surging to record highs as confidence was restored under my newly recognized leadership.
David had retired to the upstairs guest suite to rest under the watchful care of Helena and private medical staff. Laurent and I remained in the study, reviewing the final asset restorations and unfreezing the community funds to restore the Elm Street properties.
"All accounts have been secured," Laurent reported, closing his laptop. "The Sterling Consortium's domestic shell companies have collapsed. Their local operatives are fleeing the jurisdiction."
"Good," I sighed, leaning back in my chair and sipping hot coffee. "Let them run."
A quiet knock sounded at the study door. An old, loyal butler named Thomas stepped inside, carrying a small, heavy package wrapped in coarse brown paper and sealed with black wax.
"Pardon the interruption, Mr. Alex," Thomas said, bowing slightly. "A courier just delivered this at the front gate. He insisted it be handed directly to you, stating that it was sent from London per special instructions."
My instincts flared. "Who was the sender?"
"There was no name, sir. Only a serial number stamped on the delivery receipt."
I took the parcel and set it on the desk. Laurent immediately stepped forward with a portable scanner, running it over the package. "No explosives. No bio-hazards. Just dense metal and electronics."
Using an antique letter opener, I sliced through the coarse paper.
Inside lay a polished black carbon-fiber lockbox. On top of the lid was an engraved family crest—not the Vance crest, but an ancient, intricate emblem of a crowned falcon clutching a broken sword.
Beside the crest was a single phrase etched in Latin: *Sanguis Verior Auro*—*Blood is truer than gold.*
I entered the default Vance cipher on the numeric keypad. The lock clicked, and the pressurized lid slowly swung open.
Inside rested two items:
First, a faded, black-and-white photograph taken thirty-five years ago. It showed my father, David, standing outside a sprawling estate in the English countryside, with his arm wrapped around a beautiful woman with striking gray eyes—a woman who was emphatically *not* Evelyn, and whom I had never seen before in my life. In her arms, she held a newborn baby bearing a birthmark on his right wrist identical to the one on my own arm.
Second, a rugged, military-grade satellite phone.
Before I could process the photograph, the satellite phone’s screen suddenly lit up with blinding blue light.
It began to vibrate violently against the velvet lining of the box, flashing an incoming encrypted call from a restricted number in the United Kingdom.
Laurent reached for his sidearm, his eyes widening. "Alex... David told you everything about his past, didn't he?"
I stared at the vibrating phone, my heart pounding in my throat, realizing that the war with Evelyn was only the surface of an ocean of secrets my father had buried beneath thirty years of silence.
The phone rang a third time.
May you like
I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly, and pressed the green button, bringing the speaker to my ear.
*"Hello, Alexander,"* an aristocratic, unfamiliar voice whispered from across the Atlantic. *"Now that you have dealt with the vultures at Linwood... it is time to meet your real family."*
