Chapter 35 - THE RENDEZVOUS AT LAKE LUCERNE

I pulled the encrypted phone from my pocket, expecting Arthur Pendelton with news of the probate court’s final sign-off.
Instead, the screen flashed a high-priority crimson alert. The sender was an automated sensor grid from Linwood Manor's private security network.
My eyes narrowed as I read the incoming telemetry:
**ALERT: SUB-BASEMENT BREACH.**
**SECTOR: WINE CELLAR FOUNDATION.**
**MOTION DETECTED AT 14:22 EST.**
**OVERRIDE CODE: VANCE-PRIMARY-ALPHA.**
"What is it, Alex?" Helena asked, sensing the sudden shift in my posture.
"Someone just entered the sub-basement of Linwood Manor," I said, my voice hardening. "Using a primary master override code. Not a brute-force breach. A recognized family cipher."
Laurent stepped onto the terrace, his face drained of color, holding an open tablet. "Alex... Madame Helena... you need to look at this transmission that just bypassed the Zurich firewall."
He laid the tablet on the stone table between us.
On the screen was a live video feed originating from the deepest vault beneath Linwood Manor—the historic stone room where I had found the Zurich envelope behind the loose brick.
The hidden steel door behind the brick facade was wide open. Standing inside the vault, illuminated by the flickering yellow light of an oil lantern, was a figure holding a worn leather doctor's satchel.
The figure turned slowly toward the hidden security camera, revealing a gaunt, weathered face with familiar, piercing hazel eyes and a faint scar running along his left jawline.
He raised a calloused hand toward the camera lens, holding up an old, tarnished gold pocket watch—the exact watch my father had promised to pass down to me before he allegedly drew his last breath in that hospice bed six months ago.
The man smiled faintly into the lens, his lips moving silently:
*"Did you really think I would leave you to fight them alone, Alex?"*
Helena dropped her glass. It shattered against the flagstones, the red wine spilling like fresh blood across the pale marble.
"David..." she choked out.

The live feed suddenly cut to black, replaced by a single, coordinates-based prompt blinking steadily on the center of the screen:
**LAKE LUCERNE — PIER 7 — MIDNIGHT.**
