Chapter 55 - The Daughter's Bloodline

The clock ticked relentless seconds into the suffocating room. My mind raced frantically through every contingency, every security protocol Arthur and I had installed over forty years of building our legacy. The panic threatened to drown me, but beneath the fear, a white-hot fury ignited in my veins. This man had broken bread with us. He had watched my son grow from a toddler into a man, pretending to be our guardian while plotting our ruin.
"You think a signature under duress will hold in a probate court?" I demanded, stalling for time, my hands resting openly on the edge of the desk. "Zurich already froze the master accounts. Richard Vance’s affidavit has been distributed to three independent law firms across Manhattan."
"Those affidavits name Sterling Cross and Harold Montgomery, Clara," Julian countered without missing a beat. "They do not mention me. To the global financial world, Julian Sterling is the stainless-steel pillar of integrity. If you sign the power of attorney, and if both you and Derek subsequently suffer a tragic gas explosion in this historic, dry-timbered estate tonight... no court in the Western hemisphere will challenge my administrative mandate. Evelyn will inherit in name; I will control in fact."
"She’s in federal custody, Julian," Derek snarled, muscles straining under his tailored suit. "The FBI has Evelyn locked in a federal detention center in Westchester. She’s facing thirty counts of conspiracy and corporate fraud. She can’t inherit a penny!"
Julian allowed himself a quiet, patronizing smile. "Federal custody? Derek, my boy, you really understand so little about how the judiciary operates at the highest levels. Evelyn was granted a medical furlough three hours ago due to alleged acute cardiac distress. She isn't in Westchester. She is currently in the rear cabin of my armored Maybach, waiting at the end of the long driveway."
My heart plummeted into an abyss. Evelyn was here. The vicious woman who had taken pleasure in mocking my dignity, who had tried to drive me to an early grave, was sitting outside the gates of Oakridge.
"She doesn't know, does she?" I asked, my voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "She doesn't know Sterling Cross was her real father. She spent her entire life believing she was Harold Montgomery's golden child."
"She knows now," Julian said, his eyes glinting in the dark. "I told her when we crossed the Hudson River. You should have seen the look on her face, Clara. The realization that she is the sole surviving heir to Cross Global’s hidden offshore trusts... it transformed her. The greed in her soul makes Harold look like a choirboy. She wants Oakridge. She wants every stone, every dollar, and she specifically asked me to ensure you were on your knees before the end."
Suddenly, the front door of the mansion creaked open in the far distance. Soft, clicking heels echoed across the marble tiles of the foyer, pacing slowly, deliberate and mocking.
Derek stiffened. "Julian, you monster..."
May you like
The library doors swung open wider, and the shadow stretched long across the floor. Evelyn stepped into the room. She was pale, dressed in an oversized cashmere coat, her eyes lined with cold, venomous triumph. Her gaze bypassed Derek entirely and locked onto me.
"Hello, Clara," Evelyn purred, her voice dripping with venom. "Did you miss me? It seems your little victory celebration was somewhat premature."
