Chapter 38 - THE UNMASKING OF EVELYN

Evelyn twisted against Derek’s grip, her eyes wild, her carefully styled hair coming undone in frantic wisps around her neck. "Derek, let go of me! You're hurting me! Look at what she’s doing to us! She’s tearing our family apart! I did this for us! For our future! For our baby!"

Derek looked down at her stomach, then up into her eyes, his gaze completely devoid of life.

"There is no baby, Evelyn," Derek said quietly.

Evelyn went rigid. Her breath hitched in her chest. "What... what are you talking about? Of course there’s a baby! I showed you the sonogram! I showed you the positive test three weeks ago!"

"The sonogram was purchased for twelve hundred dollars from an online medical forum based in Bucharest," Derek said, his voice dropping into a register of utter, freezing contempt. "I found the digital receipt on your iCloud backup last night, Evelyn. You left your laptop open on the dressing table while you were in the bath laughing on the phone with your father about how easy it was to manipulate the 'Miller idiot.'"

Evelyn’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The blood drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin a sallow, sickly gray beneath her heavy designer foundation.

"I wanted to believe you," Derek continued, his voice trembling not with sadness, but with a profound, bone-deep disgust. "When you pulled Mom’s chair out at Easter dinner... when you made her fall and let all your friends laugh at her... I wanted so desperately to believe it was an accident. I lied to myself. I told myself you were just clumsy, that you were nervous, that you were trying to fit in. I defended you to my own mother. I made Mom feel like an outcast in her own home because I was too weak to admit that I had married a monster."

"Derek, please—" Evelyn gasped, falling to her knees, attempting to wrap her arms around his legs in a desperate reprise of her theatrical submission. "I love you! I swear I love you! My father forced me into this! He threatened to cut me off! He made me do it!"

Richard Vance looked down at his daughter with cold, calculating detachment. "Do not debase yourself further, Evelyn. It is unbecoming."

Richard turned back to me, the mask of the refined patriarch slipping away entirely, replaced by the calculating predator who had buried dozens of corporate rivals over forty years.

"So the Swiss conservatorship fails," Richard said calmly, as though discussing a minor zoning dispute over breakfast. "An impressive defensive maneuver, Clara. But you forget who I am. You forget what I possess. The foreign courts may dismiss the conservatorship, but the civil lawsuits I have filed in Delaware, New York, and London will freeze every operational account of Miller Industries for the next seven years. You will spend forty million dollars a year in legal fees just to keep the lights on in this mausoleum. Derek will never hold a corporate title again. You will be bled dry by a thousand procedural cuts until you come to me begging for a settlement."

"Will she, Richard?" Julian asked, stepping past the guards, his eyes flashing with triumph.

Julian held up his phone, which was now displaying a live financial news broadcast from Bloomberg Zurich.

*“BREAKING NEWS,”* the ticker tape read across the bottom of the screen. *“GENEVA PROSECUTOR ISSUES INTERPOL RED NOTICE FOR PROMINENT CORPORATE ATTORNEY RICHARD VANCE FOLLOWING REVELATIONS OF SYSTEMIC EMBEZZLEMENT FROM TRANS-ATLANTIC TRUSTS.”*

Richard’s eyes locked onto the screen. His fingers tightened around his scotch glass until the heavy crystal cracked with a sharp, sickening snap, dark amber liquid and shards of glass cutting into the flesh of his palm.

"What is that?" Richard whispered, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated fury.

"That," Julian Vance said, "is the fruit of Arthur Miller’s final gift to Clara. When Arthur suspected your disloyalty five years ago, he didn't just hide his medical records. He established a mirror audit system within the Swiss banking network. Every dollar you siphoned from the family foundation, every offshore shell company you used to funnel kickbacks to Harold Montgomery and Victor Sterling—it was all logged, indexed, and sealed in an automated escrow account with the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. The trigger to release that file to Interpol wasn't a court order, Richard."

May you like

Julian looked at me with profound respect.

"The trigger," Julian concluded, "was your biometric presence on the property of Oakridge estate after 8:00 PM on October 24th. The security gate’s facial recognition system validated your arrival thirty minutes ago. The dossier was transmitted to Interpol the second you stepped onto the front porch."
