Chapter 54 - The Mask of the Shepherd

The air in the library of Oakridge turned into solid ice. My breath caught in my throat, freezing every muscle in my chest. Derek stood motionless, his hands slightly raised at chest level, the muzzle of Julian Sterling’s silenced automatic pressed mercilessly against the base of his skull. The soft, familiar tick of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a sledgehammer striking an anvil.

"Julian," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my desperate attempt to steady it. "Drop the weapon. What madness has taken hold of you?"

Julian didn't blink. The man who had sat at our Thanksgiving tables, who had held Arthur’s hand on his hospital bed, and who had spent four decades orchestrating the Miller family’s legal empire smiled with terrifying warmth. His silver hair caught the amber glow of the fireplace, lending him the terrifying aura of a benevolent grandfather carrying out an execution.

"No madness, Clara," Julian answered smoothly, his voice measured, devoid of malice or excitement. "Just the final, necessary stroke of an inventory long overdue. You were never supposed to touch the hidden partition in Arthur’s desk. Arthur promised me he had burned that memorandum twenty years ago. But your late husband was always cursed with sentimentality. He kept relics he should have turned to ash."

"Let Derek go," I pleaded, stepping forward from behind the mahogany desk. "He knows nothing about Newport. He knows nothing about 1979. This is between you, me, and the dead."

"Mother, don't move," Derek warned through clenched teeth, his eyes locked on mine. His jaw was tight with fury, but he knew any sudden jerk would trigger the hair-pin hammer of Julian’s piece. "He came prepared. The estate staff... Julian, what did you do to Marcus and the security team at the front gate?"

"They are sleeping soundly, Derek," Julian murmured, nudging Derek forward into the center of the Persian rug. "A mild sedative in the afternoon coffee. Civilized, bloodless. I have never enjoyed vulgar violence. Which is why I truly regret that you forced my hand today, Clara. You fought so brilliantly against Harold Montgomery. You stood tall against Sterling Cross. Did you honestly believe that an empire worth four billion dollars could survive without a shadow king?"

"You placed Evelyn with the Montgomerys," I said, pointing a trembling finger toward the parchment lying at my feet. "Arthur’s letter... it wasn't Harold who planted her into Derek’s life. It was you."

"Of course it was me," Julian chuckled softly. "Harold Montgomery was an arrogant buffoon whose companies were teetering on the brink of bankruptcy in the late nineties. He needed capital; I gave him capital, accompanied by an orphaned infant whose real father was Sterling Cross. Harold agreed to raise her under the Montgomery name, believing she was collateral. But I nurtured her. I guided her tastes, her ambitions, her cruelty. When she married Derek, she was my piece on the board. The plan was flawless: Harold would crumble, Cross would be erased, and the combined fortunes of Cross, Montgomery, and Miller would fall directly into Evelyn’s hands—under a blind trust administered exclusively by me."

"And Evelyn?" Derek’s voice cracked with raw pain and betrayal. "Did she know? When she humiliated my mother at that Easter dinner... when she pulled her chair away and laughed... was that part of your orchestrated script?"

Julian sighed, an expression of gentle pity touching his lips. "Evelyn didn't need a script, Derek. Spite was in her blood. She is Sterling Cross's daughter through and through. But she was becoming reckless, greedy, and stupid. That is why I let you expose her. She was meant to be discarded once the assets converged. But now... you two have read the one truth that invalidates my trusteeship."

Julian stepped closer, pivoting Derek so that my son stood directly in the line of fire. The cold metal barrel remained glued beneath Derek’s ear.

"You have two choices, Clara," Julian whispered softly. "Sign the transfer of Oakridge’s sovereign conservatorship to my Geneva entity tonight, or watch Derek’s blood soak into the hearth your husband built. Choose quickly. My driver is waiting at the perimeter."
