Chapter 9 - The Turncoat's Offer

Forty-eight hours later, Madison’s pristine facade shattered entirely.
Sitting in the federal detention infirmary due to high blood pressure, she realized that Ryan’s defense team had no magic wand. Facing twenty-five years in federal prison for international money laundering and wire fraud, her vaunted love for the "family patriarch" evaporated into pure survival instinct.
ADA Marcus Vance requested my presence at the federal courthouse for an emergency proffer session. Through the one-way glass of the interrogation suite, I watched Madison. Her designer makeup was gone; she wore an orange jumpsuit, her hair tied in a messy knot, clutching a plastic cup of water.
Her high-priced private attorney had already abandoned her after her accounts were frozen. She was now represented by a court-appointed federal public defender.
"She’s ready to talk," Vance informed me. "She wants a plea deal to serve her time in a minimum-security medical camp and retain custody of the unborn child after birth. In exchange, she is offering complete, unreserved testimony against Ryan."
Through the intercom, we listened as the recording rolled.
Madison’s voice was cracked and desperate. "Ryan planned everything from the beginning! Two years ago, when his bonus was cut, he panicked. He said Clara was an easy target because she was quiet, self-sufficient, and had no husband to protect her. He called her our 'disposable collateral'!"
The public defender placed a hand on Madison’s shoulder, but she couldn't stop spilling the truth.
"He was the one who stole Evelyn’s retirement money! He told me Evelyn was an old fool who would never check her statements until she died! He bought the offshore company using Clara’s identity documents that he stole from their childhood safe at his mother's house! I just signed the digital forms because he told me we’d be millionaires in Lisbon! Please... you have to believe me! Ryan forced me to play along!"
In the adjacent holding room, Ryan was listening to the live audio feed through his defense attorney’s headset.

Through the observation window, I saw Ryan stand up so violently his chair tipped backward. He slammed his fists against the partition, screaming obscenities at the speaker, his veins bulging against his neck. The love of his life, the partner who had smugly told me to "train" for their baby, had just traded him for a sentence reduction in less than forty-eight hours.
