Chapter 5 - The Mother’s Ultimatum

Two hours after the hearing, the front buzzer of my townhome rang with violent, erratic persistence. I checked the exterior monitor. It was my mother, her face flushed crimson with rage, pounding her designer handbag against my frosted glass door.
I unlocked the door, keeping the heavy security chain in place. "You have thirty seconds, Evelyn. If you don't step back onto the public sidewalk, Daniels will have another Carter in county holding before sunset."
Evelyn gripped the edge of the door, her knuckles whitening. "You insolent, heartless ingrate! How dare you call me by my first name! I carried you for nine months! I gave you life!"
"And you spent the last fifteen years reminding me that Ryan was your only real child," I replied coldly. "What do you want?"
"Drop the financial affidavit," Evelyn demanded, dropping her voice to a harsh, trembling whisper. "Tell the prosecutor that the offshore account was a joint venture you authorized. Ryan has connections—if he gets out on bail, he can quietly pay back Sterling Crest before the federal indictment is unsealed!"
I stared at her, genuinely astounded by the depths of her delusion. "You are asking me to confess to a class-A felony so your embezzling golden boy can walk free? Do you realize that would mean twenty years in federal prison for me?"
"You don't have a family, Clara!" Evelyn spat, repeating the exact poison Madison had served at the dinner table. "You have no husband, no children, no legacy! Ryan has two daughters and a son on the way! His reputation matters! Yours doesn't! If you go away for a few years, you can rebuild your little coding projects anywhere! But Ryan’s career will be ruined forever!"
The words didn't hurt me. Instead, they acted like a cold cauterization, burning away the very last ember of daughterly obligation I had harbored in my heart.
"You really believe that, don't you?" I asked quietly.
"It’s the simple truth! Madison is distraught! The stress could harm my grandson! If you have an ounce of decency, you will sign an affidavit claiming full ownership of Aegis Horizon!"
"Let me show you something, Mother." I unlocked the chain and opened the door wide enough to hold up a printed ledger Victoria had handed me an hour ago. "Ryan didn't just embezzle from Sterling Crest's clients. Look at the secondary withdrawal executed last Tuesday."
Evelyn blinked, squinting at the page. "What is this?"
"It’s your irrevocable family trust. The one your father left you, which Ryan managed as your sole power of attorney." I tapped the bottom line with my pen. "Ryan liquidated your municipal bonds and transferred eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars into his personal shell company four days ago. He emptied your retirement accounts, Evelyn. He didn't just leave me to rot—he robbed you blind."
Her face went from furious red to an ashen, ghost-like gray. Her lips trembled. "No... no, Ryan wouldn't. He told me he was rebalancing my portfolio for high-yield treasury yields..."
"Call your bank," I said softly, stepping back inside. "And when the automated line tells you your balance is three hundred and twelve dollars, remember who you sacrificed your dignity for."

I closed the door and turned the deadbolt, leaving her sobbing on the front stoop.
