Chapter 6 - Unmasking Madison

The following Monday, Madison Carter thought she could play the victim on her terms.
She arrived at the Sterling Crest corporate headquarters accompanied by a local TV news crew she had tipped off, demanding an audience with Victoria Sterling. Madison had draped herself in pale linen, cradling her baby bump, weeping on camera about how the ruthless corporation was tearing apart a young, pious family based on the malicious lies of a jealous, estranged sister-in-law.
I was sitting in Victoria's 42nd-floor corner office when security notified us of the circus in the lobby.
"Shall I have building security escort her out?" Victoria’s executive assistant asked over the intercom.
"No," Victoria replied smoothly, looking across her glass desk at me. "Invite Mrs. Carter and her camera crew up. In fact, ADA Vance and Officer Daniels are already in the conference room. Let’s give Madison the platform she so desperately craves."
Five minutes later, Madison swept into the boardroom, her eyes red-rimmed, trailing a cameraman and an ambitious local investigative reporter named Greg Wallace.
"Ms. Sterling!" Madison cried out, clutching her stomach theatrically. "I demand to know why you are persecuting my husband! Ryan dedicated seven years of his life to your firm, and now you’re taking the word of his emotionally unstable sister who couldn't even handle babysitting her own nieces for a single afternoon—"
She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me sitting at the head of the conference table, right next to Victoria and ADA Vance.
"Hello, Madison," I greeted her evenly.
"Clara?" Madison sneered, recovering her composure quickly for the cameras. "How can you sit there while your brother rots in a cage? Greg, make sure you get this on tape. This is what happens when family jealousy destroys an innocent household!"
"Turn the cameras all the way up, Mr. Wallace," Victoria said calmly, gesturing to the seats. "Because we have a public statement that the viewers of Channel 8 will find extraordinarily educational."
Victoria clicked a remote, and the high-definition presentation screen on the wall illuminated with bank transaction statements from the Bank of Grand Cayman.
"Mrs. Carter," Victoria began, "your husband’s legal defense hinges on the claim that Clara was the sole operator of Aegis Horizon LLC. But what Ryan didn't know—because Clara’s network security caught it immediately—was that the administrative IP access for the offshore account did not originate from Ryan’s office or Clara’s house."
Victoria changed the slide. A photograph of a luxury maternity boutique in downtown Manhattan appeared, along with a timestamped receipt for twelve thousand dollars.
"The recovery password and secondary verification for the offshore wire transfers were routed to an encrypted proton-mail address registered to Madison Vance-Carter. Specifically, using your personal biometric face ID on your custom rose-gold iPhone."
The reporter, Greg Wallace, blinked, his journalistic instincts instantly kicking into overdrive. "Wait... Mrs. Carter, you had administrative access to the embezzled funds?"
"No! That's a fabrication! Clara hacked my phone!" Madison shrieked, backing toward the door.
"And here," ADA Vance said, sliding a thick blue folder across the mahogany table, "are the signed customs documents and title registrations for a two-million-dollar villa in Sintra, Portugal, purchased in your maiden name two weeks ago. You weren't a victim, Madison. You were the primary architect of the laundering exit strategy."
Madison looked around the room like a cornered animal. The red tally light on the camera was glowing bright red. The reporter signaled his cameraman to zoom in tight on her shaking hands.
"Turn that off!" Madison screamed, lunging at the lens. "Turn it off right now!"

"Officer Daniels," ADA Vance nodded toward the door. "Please execute the federal arrest warrant for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering."
