Chapter 7 - The Mother's Last Desperation

Croft’s face lost every shred of its cocky composure.

"You're bluffing," Croft stammered, pulling a phone from his pocket.

"Call Vance," Harrison Burke suggested with a polite, icy smile. "Ask him why the state banking commissioner just froze Apex Horizon’s primary clearing accounts at ten past eight this morning. You have five minutes to vacate these premises, Mr. Croft, before building security executes a citizen's arrest for unlawful commercial trespass."

Croft stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood floor. He snatched his folder, glared at me with vicious hatred, and hissed, "This isn't finished, Miss Cole. You haven't seen the last of Marcus Vance."

The three men pushed past us and fled into the elevator foyer.

The moment the elevator doors chimed shut, the entire office seemed to exhale. Marcus Kelly and the rest of my design team began applauding quietly from the hallway, but I knew this was only the first skirmish. Predatory syndicates like Apex didn't surrender just because their credit lines took a hit.

By six that evening, after a grueling day spent going over account security and legal protections with Harrison Burke, I arrived back at my apartment building. I wanted nothing more than a hot shower and complete silence.

Instead, when I stepped off the elevator on the fourteenth floor, I found Marianne Cole sitting on the floor outside my front door, wrapped in a trench coat, shivering.

Her manicured fingernails were chewed down to the quick. Her designer handbag lay neglected on the carpet beside her. When she looked up and saw me, she scrambled to her feet, clutching my arms before I could pull away.

"Vanessa! Oh, thank God, Vanessa, you have to help us!" she cried, her voice cracking in wild, unrestrained panic.

"Let go of me, Marianne," I said coldly, wrenching myself out of her grasp. "How did you even get past the front desk?"

"I told them I was your mother!" she pleaded, tears streaking her pale face. "Vanessa, Gerald was beaten up! Two men ambushed him outside the grocery store this afternoon. They broke his arm! They told him if we don't produce four hundred thousand dollars in cash by Wednesday night, they're going to burn the house down with us inside!"

I stared at her, feeling a sick mixture of pity and revulsion.

"Where was this concern for family when you sat across from me at that dinner, threatening to destroy my reputation if I didn't pay fifty thousand dollars for Bailey's wedding?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet. "Where were your tears when Dad forged my life’s work away on a forged contract?"

"We were desperate!" she screamed, dropping to her knees and clutching my knees. "We made a mistake! Parents make mistakes, Vanessa! But Gerald is your father! You have the Sterlings behind you now! That boy Nathaniel would give you whatever you asked for! Just ask him for four hundred thousand dollars! It’s pocket change to them!"

"Stand up," I commanded, disgusted by the spectacle.

"Vanessa, please!" she begged, refusing to let go. "If you don't save him, he will die! Do you want your father’s blood on your hands?!"

"No," I replied, pulling my legs back with deliberate force until she sprawled across the hallway floor. "His blood is on his own hands. And on yours. You spent twenty-eight years teaching Bailey that she was a queen who deserved everything, while treating me like an unpaid servant who owed you my soul. You brought this monster into your house, Marianne. Now deal with it."

As I stepped toward my door to unlock it, I noticed Marianne’s hand twitch toward her pocket. Something shiny caught the hallway light.

It was a flash drive—and a set of duplicate keys to my apartment.
