Chapter 11 - The Legal Counterstrike

Within forty-eight hours, the empire of cards collapsed completely.
Marcus Vance was formally indicted on twenty-two counts of commercial fraud, extortion, corporate espionage, and racketeering. With Bailey’s audio tapes and Gerald’s personal ledger in the hands of the Department of Justice, the predatory liens against *Vanguard Design* were thrown out of federal court with prejudice.
Marcus Kelly, my former design partner, entered an immediate guilty plea, surrendering all his equity back to the firm in exchange for a reduced sentence.
The local news feeds that had once blasted my name as a cold-hearted, greedy daughter now ran 24-hour specials celebrating the triumph of *Vanguard Design* against an illegal corporate syndicate. My firm’s inbox was flooded with over forty new commercial contracts from clients eager to work with an architect whose integrity had withstood the ultimate fire.
On Wednesday morning, Harrison Burke walked into my newly secured office with a fresh cup of coffee and a final legal brief.
"Gerald Cole attempted to cross the border into Canada last night," Burke reported calmly, sitting across from my desk.
I paused, looking up from my drafting table. "Did he make it?"
"Border patrol intercepted him at the Champlain crossing," Burke said. "He had twelve thousand dollars in cash hidden in his spare tire and a forged passport. He has been remanded without bail to the federal detention center. His trial will commence in three months."
"And Marianne?" I asked, surprised at how steady my voice remained.
"Your mother has been formally charged with attempted burglary and conspiracy," Burke replied. "Her legal counsel is attempting to negotiate a psychiatric evaluation, but the judge was not sympathetic after viewing the video footage from your building's hallway. She is currently awaiting trial in county custody."
I leaned back in my chair, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the sparkling waterfront.
The nightmare was over. The family that had spent my entire childhood demanding that I shrink so Bailey could shine had finally consumed themselves in the fire of their own greed.
"And Bailey?" I asked quietly.
May you like
"Miss Bailey Cole is not facing charges," Burke said softly. "Her cooperation with the state attorney provided the critical link needed to arrest Marcus Vance. However, she has surrendered her car, her apartment lease was broken due to non-payment, and she has taken a job as an assistant clerk at a retail boutique on the south side."
I nodded slowly. Bailey wasn't in prison, but for a girl who had spent her life believing she was destined for private jets and country clubs, living on minimum wage in a studio apartment was her own personal purgatory.
