Chapter 5 - The Retraction Video Goes Live

By midnight, the internet had caught fire in a completely different direction.
I sat on the plush sofa in Nathaniel’s private penthouse overlooking the city skyline, watching the video that had just gone viral across social media.
On the screen, my mother sat rigid, her eyes swollen red and rimmed with mascara stains, looking decades older than the haughty socialite who had demanded a wire transfer at dinner twenty-four hours earlier. Beside her sat Gerald, his tie undone, his face as pale as curdled milk.
*"I am Marianne Cole,"* my mother began, her voice cracking with humiliated obedience. *"And this is my husband, Gerald. We are posting this video to issue an unreserved, formal retraction of all claims made regarding our eldest daughter, Vanessa Cole."*
She swallowed hard, clearly reading from the teleprompter prepared by Eleanor Sterling’s top defamation attorney.
*"Vanessa did not embezzle funds. She did not abandon our family. She built her architectural firm through her own talent, ethics, and relentless labor. The allegations made earlier this week were entirely fabricated out of spite and financial desperation. My husband, Gerald Cole, fraudulently forged Vanessa’s signature on unauthorized loan instruments without her knowledge or consent."*
Marianne took a ragged breath, tears spilling down her cheeks. *"We apologize unconditionally to Vanessa, to Nathaniel Sterling, and to the Sterling family for our dishonorable conduct. We urge all media outlets to immediately cease the dissemination of false reports."*
The video cut off.
Beneath the post, the comment section was an avalanche of vindication.
*“I KNEW IT! Look at how guilty the dad looks!”*
*“They tried to destroy their own daughter’s career to fund the golden child’s wedding? Disgusting!”*
*“Vanessa Cole needs to press criminal charges. This is sick.”*
Just as the screen went dark, my personal phone rang. The caller ID flashed: *Bailey*.
I let it ring three times before sliding the bar across the screen and placing it on speaker.
"Vanessa?" Bailey’s voice was hysterical, trembling between hyperventilation and raw fury. "Are you happy now? Are you satisfied?! Julian blocked my number! His mother took back the diamond engagement ring before I even got past the estate gates! My life is over!"
"Your life isn't over, Bailey," I said, my tone flat and unshakable. "Your illusion is over. There's a big difference."
"How could you do this to our family?!" she screamed into the receiver. "Mom is locked in her bedroom vomiting! Dad is sitting in his study with a bottle of scotch staring at the wall! Those men from the loan company called his phone thirty minutes ago! They told him that if the money isn't paid by noon on Monday, they're going to seize our house!"
"Then Dad should have thought about that before he forged my name on three hundred and fifty thousand dollars of predatory debt," I countered coldly.
The other end went dead silent.
"You... you know about that?" Bailey whispered, her voice shrinking to a tiny, guilty whimper.
I sat up straight, my eyes narrowing. "You knew, didn't you, Bailey? You knew all along that Dad didn't just borrow money for a wedding."
Silence hung over the line, heavy and toxic.
"He told me... he told me it was the only way," Bailey sobbed defensively. "He said if we secured Julian as a husband, Julian’s family trust would clear Dad’s debts overnight and no one would ever find out! He just needed you to act as the interim collateral! Why couldn't you just play along for one month, Vanessa?! Why did you have to ruin everything for me?!"

"Because I am not your sacrifice, Bailey," I said, every syllable like ice. "Never again."
I hung up and blocked her number permanently.
