Chapter 5 - Diane’s Demand

That evening, the main residence was thick with the scent of unburned candles and wilting floral centerpieces that had been hauled back from the cancelled reception.
Diane Vale stood in the middle of the drawing room, pacing like an agitated swan. “You will sign a non-disclosure agreement,” she instructed Marin, her tone brooking no argument. “We will take a second mortgage on the family home in town, repay Larkstone quietly, and tell society that the wedding was postponed due to Nolan’s work commitments.”
“No,” Marin said.
Diane stopped in her tracks. “What did you say?”
“I said no, Mother.”
“She is your blood! If this goes to court, our family will be pariahs! Nolan’s family is old money, Marin. They will weather this by cutting us off. But the Vale name will be synonymous with scandal!”
Arthur Vale stepped out from the shadows near the terrace doors. “The Vale name was built on honest harvests, Diane. Not on theft.”
“You stay out of this, Arthur!” Diane snapped. “You let Marin run this company like a dictator while Vanessa was pushed aside with crumbs!”
“Fifteen percent of an eight-figure estate is not crumbs,” Marin countered, her voice dropping into a register of unyielding firmness. “Vanessa had a seat on the junior advisory board. She had a full allowance, a housing stipend, and an expense account that I approved without question for five years. But she didn't want equity. She wanted control. And you enabled her every step of the way.”
Marin pulled an envelope from her pocket and set it on the coffee table.
“This is an agreement for the surrender of Vanessa’s fifteen percent share, valued at fair market rate to offset the missing funds. If she signs it, I will repay the worker pension fund out of my own private equity, and Veil House will not pursue criminal restitution.”
“And if she refuses?” Diane demanded.

“Then the sheriff has the file,” Marin replied. “You have until Friday.”
