Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

At nine o'clock the following morning, the front gates of Veil House buzzed. Three black sedans rolled up the cypress-lined drive, parking directly in front of the production facility.

Richard Sterling, Senior Vice President of Larkstone Acquisitions, walked through the double doors with two corporate attorneys in tow. He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit and carried a titanium briefcase, his expression radiating predatory confidence.

“I assume congratulations are in order, Mr. Price,” Sterling said smoothly, spotting Nolan standing in the barrel room. “Though I hear the ceremony had some minor theatrical flair.”

“The ceremony didn’t happen,” Nolan answered, folding his arms. “And you’re trespassing on private agricultural land.”

“Not according to Section 14 of our development contract,” Sterling smiled, gesturing to his attorney, who placed an injunction notice on a wine barrel. “Veil House accepted our capital injection. By failing to execute the transfer of commercial rights by midnight yesterday, you have triggered a breach clause. Larkstone now has the legal authority to assume operational receivership.”

“Only if the signatory had the legal capacity to bind the corporation,” a calm voice rang out from the mezzanine.

Sterling looked up as Marin walked down the iron staircase. She was dressed in her standard work attire—dark denim, leather boots, and a structured black blazer. Behind her walked Veil House’s head of corporate compliance and the county sheriff.

“I own fifty-five percent of Veil House Holdings,” Marin said, stepping onto the concrete floor. “Our bylaws require a supermajority of seventy-five percent for any encumbrance exceeding one hundred thousand dollars. Vanessa’s fifteen percent gave her the right to receive dividends—nothing more.”

Sterling’s smile faltered slightly. “The signature on our contract belongs to Marin Vale.”

“The signature on your contract is a felony,” Marin replied, handing a certified forensic report directly to Sterling. “And the two million dollars you wired to Vela Celebrations was flagged by the regional fraud bureau two hours ago.”
