Chapter 6 - The Midnight Trespass

By sunrise, the morning sun broke through the coastal trees, casting golden light across baby Clara’s nursery. She had slept for five uninterrupted hours, nestled safely in her crib.

Downstairs, the quiet did not last.

At precisely seven-thirty in the morning, my phone chimed with an email notification from the hospital’s Chief of Staff, Dr. Robert Sterling: *Urgent: Special Board Review Regarding Community Relations.*

Nancy’s viral campaign had reached the administrative board. Attached to the email were dozens of screenshots from outraged community members demanding an explanation for my alleged neglect. Nancy had tagged every major donor of the hospital foundation, framing me as an unhinged, heartless physician who hoarded wealth while starving children froze at her gate.

I took a deep, grounding breath, walked into my study, and opened my laptop. It was time to stop playing defense.

I dialed Dr. Sterling directly.

"Jocelyn," he answered on the second ring, sounding weary. "I’m looking at over fifty emails from donors. What in the world is happening with your family?"

"Robert, look at your inbox right now," I said calmly. "I just forwarded you three certified documents. The first is my independent property deed, purchased solely with my earnings and personal inheritance. The second is an affidavit from the executor of my father's estate proving my mother received her full portion in cash six months ago and squandered it. The third is a Cease and Desist drafted by Rebecca Haines, which will be served to Nancy at noon today."

Silence hung over the line for several seconds. Robert clicked through the files. I could hear his sharp intake of breath as he reviewed the legal balance sheets.

"She blew two hundred thousand dollars in six months?" Robert muttered in disbelief. "And then tried to extort you by weaponizing the hospital's reputation?"

"Precisely," I said. "And if the board issues any statement other than 'This is a private legal matter involving gross extortion that is currently before the court,' Nancy will drag the hospital into a public liability mess. Rebecca is prepared to hold any party liable who repeats these defamatory falsehoods."

"Understood," Dr. Sterling said, his tone shifting from bureaucratic annoyance to absolute professional solidarity. "We’ll release a boilerplate statement confirming the hospital does not comment on frivolous personal disputes, and we will restrict comments on all public hospital pages. Protect your baby, Jocelyn. We have your back."

As I hung up, my doorbell rang.

I checked the monitor. It wasn't Nancy. It was Chloe, standing alone at the front door without her luggage, holding her four-year-old son by the hand, her eyes rimmed with red tears.
