Chapter 11 - The Desperate Gambit

When Nancy received the formal notice of forfeiture from Arthur Vance’s office that evening, her reaction was not remorse—it was pure, blind hysteria.

At seven o'clock, my phone pinged with a notification from the county sheriff's alert system. Nancy had shown up at the county courthouse, demanding an emergency restraining order against me and attempting to file a malicious CPS complaint alleging infant abandonment.

She didn't know that Rebecca Haines was already standing in the courthouse lobby.

Rebecca called me immediately. I put her on speaker so Chloe could hear.

"She’s in the clerk's office right now, screaming at the top of her lungs," Rebecca said, her background filled with echoing commotion. "She tried to hand the clerk a handwritten claim that you kidnapped Clara from the hospital without medical clearance."

"Did they take it?" I asked, cradling Clara as she nursed quietly.

"The clerk called County Detective Miller," Rebecca laughed darkly. "Miller looked at the documents, looked at Chloe’s sworn affidavit regarding Nancy’s extortion scheme, and immediately informed Nancy that filing a demonstrably fraudulent report to protective services is a class-three felony in this state."

"What happened?" Chloe asked, leaning closer to the phone.

"Nancy threw a temper tantrum, slapped the paperwork off the counter, and refused to leave," Rebecca replied. "They just cuffed her for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. She’s being booked into county holding as we speak."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

For thirty years, Nancy had towered over our lives like an untouchable tyrant. She had used guilt, shame, social manipulation, and endless threats to bend everyone around her to her will. And now, she sat in a sterile holding cell, undone entirely by the very system she had tried to weaponize against her own daughter.

Chloe covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face—not of sorrow, but of sheer, unadulterated relief.

"It’s over," Chloe whispered. "She can't hurt us anymore."

"Not quite," Rebecca’s voice cut in, suddenly turning dead serious. "Jocelyn, there’s one more thing."

My heart gave a sudden thump. "What is it, Rebecca?"
