Chapter 10 - Breaking the Cycle

The man walking toward my gate was not a stranger. It was Arthur Vance, the senior partner of the estate law firm that had handled my late father’s estate decades ago.

I pressed the intercom. "Mr. Vance?"

"Dr. Jocelyn," his aged voice came through with solemn dignity. "I apologize for arriving unannounced. Victor informed me of the events of the past forty-eight hours. There is a matter regarding your father's final testamentary wishes that could only be executed upon the occurrence of a specific legal condition."

I buzzed the gate open and invited him into the study. Chloe joined us, clutching a hot cup of tea, her eyes wide with curiosity.

Arthur sat across from us, laying a thick, sealed parchment envelope onto the mahogany desk. The seal was red wax, stamped with my father’s personal signet ring.

"When your father, Thomas, passed away twenty years ago," Arthur explained, adjusting his spectacles, "he knew the extent of your mother’s pathological narcissism. He knew that money alone would never satisfy her greed, and he knew she would eventually attempt to devour her own daughters once his estate was exhausted."

Chloe swallowed hard. "Dad knew?"

"Thomas anticipated this exact scenario," Arthur continued. "He created an irrevocable trust tied to Clover Ridge Drive—this very parcel of land. But he added a protective clause: If Nancy ever attempted to contest your ownership or levy malicious legal action against his heirs, a sealed codicil would immediately take effect."

"What does it say?" I asked, staring at the wax seal.

"It revokes Nancy’s remaining lifetime pension entirely," Arthur said smoothly. "Every remaining asset, including the family home in which she currently lives, transfers immediately and irrevocably to a joint trust owned exclusively by you and Chloe."

Chloe gasped, dropping her spoon onto the saucer. "The house in the valley? Nancy’s house?"

"It is no longer Nancy's house," Arthur replied with a faint, satisfied smile. "As of two hours ago, when your mother signed a verified statement threatening legal action against Jocelyn’s medical license, the forfeiture clause was officially triggered. Nancy is legally a tenant-at-will in a home she no longer owns."

The poetic justice hung heavy in the quiet room. Nancy had tried to leave us homeless. Instead, she had just evicted herself.
