Chapter 7 - The Hostage in the Shadows

The secondary safehouse was a secure brownstone tucked away in an unassuming neighborhood on the North Shore.

In the master bedroom, the only light came from the crackling fireplace. Sophie sat beside Adrian on the edge of the bed, carefully stitching the laceration on his shoulder with surgical thread from a medical kit. Her hands were surprisingly steady.

"Where did you learn to stitch like this?" Adrian asked, his voice low and raspy as he stared at the fire.

"Mom had home care for six months," Sophie answered quietly, knotting the thread and cutting it with surgical scissors. "We couldn't afford private nurses every day. You learn quickly when you don't have a choice."

Adrian turned his head, looking at her in the warm firelight. Her emerald gown was torn at the hem, her hair was damp from the rain, and there was a dark bruise along her collarbone. Yet to Adrian, she looked like an angel who had walked straight through hell without losing an ounce of her soul.

"You saved my life tonight, Sophie," Adrian said, reaching up to touch the bruise on her shoulder with incredible gentleness. "No one has ever fought for me. Men fight for my money, my power, my fear. But you... you had no reason to protect me."

"I had every reason," Sophie whispered, leaning into his touch despite herself. "You're a good man, Adrian Vale. You just forgot how to show it because you were too busy keeping the wolves away."

Adrian’s breath hitched. For a long, breathless moment, the space between them vanished. Adrian leaned in, his lips brushing softly against hers—a tender, reverent kiss that carried years of buried longing, loneliness, and salvation.

Sophie kissed him back, her fingers tangling in his dark, damp hair. In that quiet room, the violence of the city outside ceased to exist.

The moment shattered when Lucian knocked urgently on the open door frame.

"Boss," Lucian said, his voice unusually grim.

Adrian pulled back from Sophie, clearing his throat and instantly locking his cold mask back into place. "What is it, Lucian?"

"We raided Vance's main distribution warehouse, but he wasn't there," Lucian reported, his jaw tight. "He knew we'd strike back. He went underground. But... he left a package at the gate."

Lucian stepped inside and handed Adrian a manila envelope. Inside was a single photograph and a handwritten note.

Adrian looked at the photo, and his face went deathly pale.

"What is it?" Sophie asked, standing up from the bed with a knot of dread tightening in her gut.

Adrian tried to slide the photo behind his back, but Sophie snatched it from his fingers.

Her breath caught in her throat.

The photograph showed Evelyn Ellis—the sweet, elderly woman from Bell & Finch—tied to a wooden chair in an abandoned industrial warehouse, her eyes wide with terror.

Pinned to her sweater was a receipt for eighteen dollars and sixty-four cents.

The note beneath read:

*The girl started this over eighteen dollars. If you want the old woman to breathe past dawn, Sophie Carter comes to Pier 14 alone. No cops. No army. Just the girl who cost me my empire.*

"No," Sophie gasped, tears instantly springing to her eyes. "No, God, please no... She had nothing to do with this!"

"It's a trap, Sophie," Adrian said firmly, grabbing her by both shoulders. "Vance knows you're my weakness now. He knows I won't let you walk into an ambush, so he wants to draw me out on his terms. You cannot go."

"She is an innocent old woman!" Sophie cried, her voice cracking with fierce agony. "She forgot her wallet, Adrian! That's all she did! If she dies because I paid her bill, I won't be able to look at myself in the mirror for the rest of my life!"

"I will send my men—"

"If Vance sees a single one of your soldiers, he will put a bullet in her head!" Sophie pulled away from him, her eyes ablaze with desperate determination. "He asked for me. I’m going."

Adrian looked at her, his slate eyes burning with terrifying fury—not at her, but at the thought of losing her. "I will not let you walk to your death, Sophie."

May you like

"Then don't let me die," Sophie pleaded, stepping close and placing her hands against his chest, right over his beating heart. "Trust me, Adrian. We beat Mercer with intelligence. We can beat Vance the same way. But we have to play his game long enough to save her."
