Chapter 3 - The Lion's Intervention

"Get behind me, Leo," Sophie whispered fiercely, reaching blindly behind her toward the magnetic knife strip above the sink. Her fingers wrapped around the wooden handle of an eight-inch chef's knife.

"Put the cutlery down, sweetheart," the scarred man laughed, resting the crowbar against his shoulder as his partner closed the splintered door behind them. "My name is Silas. We work for Mr. Vance. Your little brother owes us a hefty sum, and word on the street is you just cost our boss another fifty grand downtown by playing the saint at Bell & Finch."

Sophie leveled the knife, her hands steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears. "Get out of my apartment before I scream for the police."

Silas chuckled, a dry, grating sound. "The cops don't come down this alley, honey. Not for people like you. Now, here's how this goes: you give us whatever cash you've got in that purse, your brother comes with us to work off his interest in the chop shop, and maybe—just maybe—we let you keep your pretty face."

Silas took a heavy step forward, his hand reaching out to grab Sophie’s wrist.

Sophie didn't hesitate. She slashed forward, the blade slicing through the leather of his sleeve, missing his forearm by millimeters.

Silas snarled, his amusement vanishing into pure rage. "You little bitch—"

He raised the crowbar. Leo screamed and lunged forward to shield his sister.

The door behind the two thugs didn't just open—it exploded off its hinges.

A thunderous crack echoed through the small apartment as Silas's partner was hurled bodily into the hallway wall, his head denting the drywall before he crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

Silas spun around, swinging the crowbar blindly.

A hand clad in black leather caught the steel bar mid-air with shocking, effortless power.

Adrian Vale stood in the threshold.

Behind him in the dimly lit hallway stood three men in dark suits, their weapons drawn and fitted with suppressors. But Adrian hadn't drawn a weapon. His cold, slate eyes were fixed on Silas with an expression of quiet, lethal disdain.

"You're in the wrong zip code, Silas," Adrian said smoothly.

Silas’s face drained of all color. The crowbar trembled in his grip, but Adrian’s hold on the iron was unbreakable. "V-Vale... This is Vance's business. The kid owes us—"

"The boy owes Vance nothing," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Because Vance operates on my docks, uses my distribution lines, and breathes my air. And the moment your boss sent dogs into an apartment under my surveillance, it became my business."

With a swift, sickening twist, Adrian wrenched the crowbar from Silas's grip, breaking two of the man's fingers with an audible snap.

Silas shrieked, clutching his hand to his chest.

Adrian didn't even blink. He tossed the crowbar onto the floor with a dull clatter, grabbed Silas by the throat, and slammed him against the refrigerator with enough force to rattle the magnetic photos off the metal.

"Tell Dominic Vance that Daniel Mercer's audit was conducted on my orders," Adrian whispered into Silas's ear. "Tell him the twelve-thousand-dollar debt is settled in full. And tell him that if any of his hyenas come within three blocks of Miss Carter or her brother again, I will personally feed him to the machinery at Pier 4."

Adrian released his grip. Silas collapsed onto his knees, gasping for breath, before scrambling backward toward the door. He dragged his unconscious partner into the hallway and fled down the stairwell without looking back.

The apartment fell dead silent, save for the rhythmic dripping of the kitchen faucet and Leo’s ragged breathing.

Adrian adjusted the cuffs of his tailored charcoal coat. He turned his attention to Sophie, who was still holding the chef's knife, her knuckles white.

"You can put the knife away now, Miss Carter," Adrian said mildly. "Unless you intend to use it on me."

Sophie slowly lowered the blade, though her gaze never wavered from his. "You were watching me."

"I was protecting an investment," Adrian corrected.

"I am not an investment," Sophie snapped, her voice trembling with leftover adrenaline. "And I don't belong to you."

Leo looked between the mafia kingpin and his sister in utter bewilderment. "Soph... who is this?"

"Someone who just saved your hands," Adrian replied, glancing at the boy before turning back to Sophie. "Pack a bag for yourself and your brother. Vance is erratic. Even with my warning, this building is compromised."

"I am not running away with a mob boss," Sophie declared firmly, crossing her arms.

Adrian stepped closer, his imposing presence filling the cramped kitchen. "You aren't running away. I am hiring you."

Sophie stared at him in disbelief. "Hiring me? For what? To pour coffee for your hitmen?"

"I don't need a waitress, Miss Carter," Adrian said, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made the air in the room feel thin. "I have plenty of killers. What I lack is someone who cannot be bought, someone who looks a man in the eye and tells the truth, and someone who understands the true value of eighteen dollars. I need a director for the Vale Foundation—a public charity my late brother Marcus established, which my enemies are currently trying to dismantle."

Sophie’s breath caught in her throat. Marcus Vale’s foundation. The very clinic that had given free medicine to families like hers before Marcus was murdered.

"And if I say no?" Sophie asked quietly.

"Then you stay here, Vance's men return when my guards rotate, and your brother pays for his mistakes with his life," Adrian said without a trace of cruelty, only ruthless reality. "I am offering you a salary that clears his debt in three months, full security, and the authority to distribute five million dollars of my clean money to people who actually need it. Do you accept, Miss Carter?"

Sophie looked at her bruised, terrified brother. Then she looked into the cold, slate eyes of the devil standing in her kitchen.

"On one condition," Sophie said.

Adrian’s lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile. "Name it."

"You don't get to kill anyone in my presence."

May you like

Adrian tilted his head, intrigued. "Deal."
