Chapter 6 - Blood and Loyalty

The rain began to fall in sheets as Adrian’s armored Maybach pulled away from the Drake Hotel, slicing through the midnight gloom of the Chicago avenues.

Inside the quiet cabin of the car, Sophie stared out the tinted window, watching the neon city lights bleed across the wet glass. The adrenaline from the ballroom was finally beginning to fade, leaving behind a deep, bone-weary exhaustion.

"You did magnificent work tonight, Sophie," Adrian said from the leather seat beside her. He had discarded his bowtie and unbuttoned his collar, looking surprisingly human.

Sophie gave a tired smile. "I just told the truth."

"In this city, telling the truth is the most dangerous weapon of all," Adrian murmured. He leaned back against the headrest, looking at her with a soft intensity. "Marcus would have been proud of you. He spent his whole life trying to build something clean. Tonight, you saved it."

"Why did you let them take it over in the first place, Adrian?" Sophie asked, turning toward him. "You’re the most powerful man in Chicago. How did Mercer and Vance get their hooks into Marcus's foundation?"

Adrian looked down at his hands—hands that had built an empire through violence.

"Because after Marcus died," Adrian said quietly, his voice heavy with an old, jagged sorrow, "I couldn't bear to look at it. Every time I stepped into that clinic, every time I saw his name on a plaque, I remembered the blood on his white doctor's coat. I thought... if I built an army big enough, if I controlled every dock and every warehouse, I could keep the darkness from touching his memory. But darkness doesn't stay in the streets, Sophie. It creeps into the boardroom while you're busy fighting in the alleys."

Sophie felt her heart ache for him. Beneath the cold exterior of the mafia kingpin lived a broken brother who had carried the crushing weight of grief alone for a decade.

She reached out and placed her hand over his. Adrian stiffened for a second, unaccustomed to warmth, before his long fingers turned over and gently laced through hers.

"You're not a monster, Adrian," Sophie whispered. "Monsters don't protect people. Monsters don't avenge their brothers."

Before Adrian could speak, the night shattered.

A heavy, modified dump truck roared out of a blind intersection on Grand Avenue, slamming directly into the side of their armored vehicle with the force of an earthquake.

The Maybach spun across the wet asphalt, metal screeching against metal as the windows spiderwebbed from the catastrophic impact. The car slammed violently into a concrete support pillar beneath the elevated train tracks, coming to an abrupt, violent halt.

Sophie’s head struck the reinforced glass. Darkness flickered at the edges of her vision, smoke filling the cabin as the smell of burning rubber and gasoline choked the air.

"Sophie!" Adrian’s voice cracked with panic.

She groaned, blinking through the haze. Adrian was already moving. He kicked the crushed passenger door open with immense force, his face streaked with blood from a jagged laceration near his hairline.

"Out! Now!" he commanded, pulling her across the twisted frame of the car into the pouring rain.

Across the street, two black SUVs skidded to a halt. Men in tactical vests, armed with automatic rifles, spilled out into the downpour.

"Vance," Adrian cursed under his breath. He drew a custom black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, pulling Sophie behind the massive concrete pillar. "Lucian is five minutes out. Stay behind me!"

Gunfire erupted, the deafening roar of automatic rounds chewing into the concrete pillar, sending showers of dust and stone raining down on them.

Adrian leaned around the barrier, returning fire with lethal, terrifying precision. Two of Vance's gunmen crumpled to the wet pavement within seconds. But there were too many. Another round grazed Adrian’s shoulder, tearing through his tuxedo jacket and drawing fresh blood.

"Adrian!" Sophie cried, her heart leaping into her throat.

"I’m fine," he grunted, though his face was pale with pain. "Keep your head down!"

A gunman flanking from the right stepped onto the curb, raising his rifle directly at Adrian's exposed back as Adrian aimed at two men advancing down the center.

There was no time to think.

Sophie didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy, broken chunk of concrete from the shattered pillar and hurled it with all her strength at the flanking gunman. The stone struck him square in the temple, throwing his aim off as his rifle discharged harmlessly into the asphalt.

Adrian spun instantly, dropping the man with a single, precise shot.

He looked back at Sophie, his eyes wide with shock. "You threw a rock at an armed hitman?"

"I told you I wasn't going to let anyone die!" Sophie yelled over the sound of the rain.

Screeching tires tore through the avenue as three black sedans bearing the Vale family crest roared into the intersection. Lucian and a dozen heavily armed guards spilled out, laying down an overwhelming wall of suppressive fire that instantly broke Vance’s ambush. The surviving attackers scrambled back into their SUV and fled into the night.

Lucian sprinted to the pillar, his weapon smoking. "Boss! Are you hit?"

May you like

"I’m alive," Adrian gasped, leaning heavily against the concrete, though his eyes never left Sophie. "Get us to the secondary safehouse. And find Dominic Vance. He dies tonight."
