Chapter 9 - The Unwritten Ledger

Six months later, the spring flowers were blooming across the expansive lawns of the Westchester estate, splashing vibrant colors of violet and yellow against the manicured green hedges.

The annual charity gala for the New York Metropolitan Police Department was once again being hosted in the grand ballroom of the Marlowe estate. But this time, the atmosphere was entirely different. There were no whispers of fear, no nervous glances toward the exits, and no shadows lingering in the corners.

Inside the main dining hall, politicians, judges, and corporate executives mingled freely under the brilliant light of the crystal chandeliers.

Standing near the grand piano, Brianna Monroe caught her reflection in the tall, arched window. She wore a deep crimson evening gown that hugged every curve of her body with absolute, unapologetic confidence. Her hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, and a simple diamond pendant—gifted to her by Dominic on their six-month anniversary—rested against her collarbone.

At thirty-four, she had spent years believing she needed to make herself smaller to fit into a world that demanded conformity. Now, looking out over a room filled with people who respected her intellect, her strength, and her unyielding presence, she knew she would never shrink again.

“You’re staring at yourself,” a deep, familiar voice murmured near her ear.

Dominic appeared beside her, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her effortlessly against his side. His bespoke tuxedo fit his broad frame perfectly, and the slate-gray eyes that scanned the room carried no trace of suspicion—only the quiet, absolute confidence of a man who had finally found his true anchor.

“I was just admiring the decor,” Brianna teased, leaning her head against his shoulder. “I picked out the floral arrangements myself, you know. Much better than last year’s.”

“Everything you touch is an improvement, Monroe,” Dominic replied, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her dark hair.

Across the room, the mayor of New York raised a champagne glass in their direction, offering a respectful nod of acknowledgment. Dominic nodded back, his grip on Brianna’s waist tightening slightly, anchoring her firmly where she belonged.

“Do you ever miss it?” Brianna asked quietly, looking out over the glittering ballroom. “The shadows? The hunt?”

Dominic looked down at her, a slow, genuine smile curving his lips. “I spent twenty years chasing ghosts in the dark, Brianna. I don't need shadows anymore.” He lifted his glass of scotch, clinking it gently against her flute of sparkling cider. “I have the only ledger that matters right here.”

Brianna smiled, her dark eyes flashing with warmth and unshakeable strength.

“Good,” she said, turning her face up to meet his lips. “Because I’ve already balanced the books for the rest of our lives.”
