Chapter 8 - The Price of Legacy

Three weeks later, the morning frost was just beginning to cling to the iron gates of the Marlowe estate in Westchester.
Inside the grand library, the air smelled of burning oak from the massive stone fireplace and the sharp, clean scent of fresh coffee. The bullet holes from the shootout had been meticulously repaired by master carpenters, leaving the wood-paneled walls looking as pristine as they had a century ago.
Brianna stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit that accentuated her broad shoulders and commanding physical presence. Her laptop rested on the mahogany desk behind her, but for once, the spreadsheets were closed.
The heavy oak doors swung open silently.
Dominic walked in, carrying a thick manila folder stamped with the seal of the New York State Supreme Court. He didn't look like a mob boss anymore. In a bespoke navy blazer and open-collared white shirt, he looked like what he was legally becoming: a legitimate corporate titan building a dynasty based on steel, real estate, and shipping.
He stopped a few feet behind her, setting the folder down on the edge of the desk.
“It’s official,” Dominic said softly.
Brianna turned around, crossing her arms over her chest as she looked at the folder. “The restructuring of the Marlowe Foundation?”
“Done,” Dominic nodded. “Half of the endowment is being transferred to a municipal infrastructure fund for the Brooklyn shipyards. No strings. No syndicate ties. Just clean capital.” He paused, his slate-gray eyes softening as he looked at her. “And the remaining half... is being placed in a perpetual trust managed independently by Monroe Financial Investigations.”
Brianna’s breath hitched slightly. Her firm—her name—now held the keys to the entire philanthropic arm of the Marlowe empire.
“That’s a lot of power to hand over to an accountant, Dominic,” she said, her voice dropping into a quiet, serious register.
“You earned every digit,” Dominic replied, stepping closer until he stood just inches away. The familiar, comforting scent of cedar and clean ozone surrounded her. “My father built this empire on blood and fear. I spent five years trying to protect it with vengeance. But you... you brought the truth to light. You gave me a future I didn't think I deserved.”
Brianna reached out, her hand resting flat against the solid wall of his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat. It was the same gesture she had made the night everything changed at the Hawthorne Grand ballroom—only now, there was no terror, no deceit, and no hidden daggers.
“We aren't finished yet,” Brianna whispered, a bold, confident smile spreading across her lips. “There are still twenty-two offshore accounts in the Caymans that need a complete forensic overhaul by Monday morning.”
Dominic let out a low rumble of amusement, his large hand coming up to cup her cheek, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jawline.

“Then I suppose,” Dominic murmured against her hair, “we have a lot of work to do.”
