Chapter 7 - The Viral Leak

While the Adirondack compound was shrouded in serene silence, the rest of the world had gone entirely mad.

It started with a forty-second video clip uploaded to an anonymous TikTok account at 6:15 AM.

The video had been filmed covertly by one of the junior executives who had been in the penthouse the previous morning. The footage was grainy, but the audio was crystal clear.

*“Go ahead,” Alexander Carter’s voice boomed over the speakers. “Open it, and one hundred million dollars is yours.”*

Then came the laughter of the millionaires. The sight of the three-year-old girl in scuffed sneakers and a frayed t-shirt walking up to the mythical titanium vault of Carter Global.

And then: the touch. The green light. *The click.*

The video ended on Alexander Carter’s face, pale as death, as the multi-ton door swung open, followed by Elena’s desperate cry: *“Mr. Carter, please! We'll leave right now!”*

By noon, the video had eighty million views on Facebook. By 2:00 PM, it was the lead story on CNN, Bloomberg, and the BBC.

**THE CLEANING LADY’S HEIR?** screamed the headline on the *Wall Street Journal*.

**BILLION-DOLLAR BABY: DID A TODDLER JUST CRACK WALL STREET’S GREATEST MYSTERY?** ran the *New York Post*.

Speculation exploded across social media. Rumors flew that Carter Global had engineered a publicity stunt; others claimed Alexander had fathered a secret child; corporate analysts pointed out the sudden suspension of Carter Global stock trading on the NYSE.

Inside the compound’s war room, Alexander stood before a bank of high-definition monitors displaying live news broadcasts, financial tickers, and Twitter feeds.

"It’s trending worldwide," Elena said, standing behind him, holding a mug of tea. She watched the footage of her daughter playing on millions of screens with a sickening sense of vertigo. "Everyone knows her face, Alexander. How is this keeping her safe?"

"Blake’s allies leaked it," Alexander said, crossing his arms carefully to avoid straining his shoulder. "They wanted to create chaos. They thought that by exposing Sofie publicly, they could force a hostile takeover before we could authenticate her claim. They want the public to think you're a con artist who planted a biometric exploit."

"Can they do that?"

"They’re already trying," Marcus entered the room, his arm in a clean bandage, carrying an encrypted tablet. "Sir, the board of directors has called an emergency extraordinary shareholder summit for tomorrow morning at ten o'clock at the New York Stock Exchange headquarters. Blake’s faction has mobilized. They’ve brought in three forensic accounting firms and a smear team. They intend to invoke the Incapacity Clause, void Julian’s shares, and strip you of the CEO seat."

"Who called the meeting?" Alexander’s voice was venom.

"David Vance," Marcus replied.

Elena dropped her mug. It shattered against the hardwood, hot tea splashing across her sneakers.

Alexander spun around. "Elena?"

Elena’s face was bloodless. "Vance? David Vance?"

"He’s the senior board member representing the Swiss syndicate," Alexander said, studying her closely. "Why? Do you know that name?"

"That’s... that’s Jules’s middle name," Elena whispered, her hands shaking. "When Jules lived with me, his fake driver’s license said *Jules Vance*. He told me Vance was his mother’s maiden name."

Alexander cursed under his breath, striking the table with his good fist.

"David Vance is Julian’s maternal uncle," Alexander growled. "He was the insider. He’s the one who gave the flight coordinates to the hijackers eight years ago. He was the architect all along. Richard Blake was just his attack dog."

"He knows who I am," Elena realized, terror seizing her chest. "Julian chose that alias because he wanted David to see it. He wanted his uncle to know he was hunting him."

"And tomorrow," Alexander said, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fire, "we are going to feed David Vance to the wolves."

"How?" Elena stepped forward. "You're wounded. Sofie is three years old! You can't put a toddler in front of a hostile board of billionaires and international media!"

"I don't have to put her on the witness stand, Elena," Alexander said, turning the tablet toward her. "Julian’s journal contains the master encryption keys to the company’s off-book accounts. Every bribe David Vance ever took. Every transaction wiring blood money from Zurich to fund the hit on Julian’s plane. It’s all there."

He reached out, his hand steady and warm against Elena's shoulder.

"The public thinks you are a helpless cleaning woman who wandered into an impossible inheritance. The board thinks you are terrified prey waiting to be bought off or buried. Tomorrow, we show them that you are the mother of the Carter legacy."

Elena looked down at her hands. For years, she had worn yellow rubber gloves, scrubbing away the filth left behind by men like David Vance and Richard Blake. She had swallowed insults, accepted poverty, and lowered her eyes so her daughter could have bread.

She clenched her fists. The fear didn't leave her, but beneath the fear, an unfamiliar, roaring heat took root.

"Get me a dress," Elena said, meeting Alexander’s fierce gaze. "And make sure the media has front-row seats."
