Chapter 5 - Blood on the Marble

The shatter of Kevlar-reinforced glass and concrete detonated through the penthouse.
Two black-clad figures descended on high-speed tactical ropes through the shattered skylights above the wet bar. Flashbang grenades exploded in rapid succession—*BANG-BANG-BANG*—filling the room with blinding white light and concussive shockwaves that threw Blake and his men off balance.
"Drop your weapons! Carter Tactical! On the ground!"
Alexander didn't drop to the floor. The moment the flashbangs went off, he lunged sideways, snatched the Glock from the scorched side-table, and fired three double-taps with chilling precision.
The operator closest to the vault dropped instantly. The second tactical man returned fire, bullets chewing chunks out of the limestone wall inches above Alexander’s head, but a Carter contractor descending from the ceiling eliminated him before he could adjust his aim.
Richard Blake screamed, firing wildly into the smoke. One of his stray rounds struck Alexander in the left shoulder.
Alexander grunted, spun halfway around from the impact, and slammed against the heavy titanium frame of the vault door. Blood immediately bloomed across his crisp white dress shirt, soaking the fine fabric in crimson.
Inside the vault, Elena shrieked, pressing her hand against the monitor. "Alexander!"
Sofie began to wail, burying her head against Elena's chest. "Mama! The bad men are loud!"
"Don't look, Sofie. Keep your eyes closed, baby, don't look!"
On screen, Blake stumbled backward toward the open stairwell door, clutching his side where a piece of flying shrapnel had torn through his coat. "Fall back! To the helipad! Move!"
The surviving mercenaries dragged Blake through the heavy fire doors, firing suppressing bursts down the hallway to cover their retreat.
The room cleared of active hostile fire, leaving only the haze of gunpowder, the shrill scream of fire alarms, and three heavily armed Carter security operatives scanning the perimeter.
"Clear!" one shouted.
"Penthouse secure! Medical team to the executive suite! Boss is hit!"
Alexander waved them off with his good arm, slumping against the vault door. He slid down until he was sitting on the floor, leaving a thick smear of dark blood against the gray titanium. He was breathing heavily, his face drenched in cold sweat, his left arm hanging limp.
He tapped the metal casing behind his head with the butt of his pistol. Three slow taps.
*Clack. Clack. Clack.*
Inside the vault, Elena recognized the cadence. It was the rhythm Jules used to tap on their front door in Queens whenever he forgot his keys.
*Tap-tap... tap.*
Elena didn't hesitate. She stood up, set Sofie down, and grabbed the child’s small hand.
"Sofie," Elena said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "Put your hand on the little green light inside the door. Right there. Press it for Mommy."
Sofie sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve, and pressed her tiny thumb against the interior sensor pad.
The hydraulics hissed. The locking bolts retracted. The massive door swung open into the smoke-filled ruins of the office.
The Carter security guards instantly pivoted their rifles toward the opening—then froze, their eyes widening in shock as they lowered their muzzles.
Elena didn't look at their guns. She dropped to her knees beside Alexander, ripping the hem of her cleaning smock with both hands to create a tourniquet.
"You idiot," she sobbed, tears cutting clean paths through the dust on her cheeks. "You absolute idiot. Why didn't you step inside?"
Alexander looked at her, his vision swimming, his lips pale. He looked past her to where Sofie stood in the vault opening, clutching the wooden sparrow music box against her tiny chest.
"If I got inside," Alexander whispered, his voice fading, "no one would have been out here to make sure Blake didn't plant a shaped charge on the hinges. Julian... Julian would have kicked my ass if I let anything happen to her."
Elena pressed the wad of fabric hard against the bullet wound in his shoulder. Alexander hissed in pain, his eyes rolling back slightly.
"Stay with me, Alexander," Elena ordered, her voice taking on a fierce, commanding edge that startled the surrounding tactical guards. "You hear me? You owe Julian eight years of protection, and you owe Sofie a hundred million dollars! You don't get to die on my floor!"
A faint, bloody smirk touched Alexander's lips.
May you like
"Fair enough," he murmured, before his head slumped back against the steel, falling unconscious.
