Chapter 3 - Lockdown

The building shuddered.

It wasn't an earthquake. It was the sound of the high-security steel blast shutters descending over every window from the sub-basement to the eighty-fourth floor. In seconds, the breathtaking view of Central Park and the dusky New York skyline was replaced by corrugated, military-grade armor plate. The room plunged into amber emergency lighting.

Sofie hid her face in Elena’s neck, whimpering softly. "Mama, it’s dark. I want to go home."

"I know, baby. I know. Close your eyes," Elena murmured, rocking her frantically while staring at Alexander. "Who is trying to kill her? Why would anyone want to hurt a baby?"

"Because that baby just became the majority shareholder of Carter Global," Alexander said coldly, walking over to the office's private wet bar. He didn't pour liquor; he yanked open a hidden panel beneath the sink, exposing a rack of tactical communication devices and a matte-black Glock 19.

Elena gasped, retreating another two steps. "You're insane."

"Julian owned fifty-one percent of the voting equity," Alexander explained, checking the magazine of the pistol with practiced, terrifying efficiency before sliding it into his holster. "When he went missing, our father’s will dictated that his shares would enter an eight-year escrow. If no heir claimed them, they were to be liquidated and distributed equally among the board members."

He paused, looking directly at Elena.

"The escrow period was set to expire at midnight tonight. At twelve-oh-one, Richard Blake and his private equity consortium would have seized total control of this company, stripped Julian’s biometric patents, and sold them to foreign defense contractors. But Julian built a dead-man's switch into this vault. The moment Sofie's DNA authorized that lock, the escrow was revoked. Sofie owns this building. She owns the satellites. She owns everything."

Elena’s head spun. A cleaning woman. A woman who counted quarters to buy laundry detergent at the corner laundromat. Her daughter, whose shoes were held together with superglue, was the sole owner of a forty-billion-dollar empire.

"I don't want it," Elena cried. "Sign it over to you! Take it! Just let us walk out the service entrance!"

"If you walk out that door, you will be dead before your foot touches the curb," Alexander snapped. "Blake isn't an investor, Elena. He’s a front for the syndicate that tried to kill Julian eight years ago. They realized Julian survived the plane crash. When they found him living in Queens under an alias, they finished the job. They thought the secret died with him. But they didn't know about you. And they didn't know about her."

Suddenly, the intercom on Alexander's desk hissed to life with static.

*“Mr. Carter? Mr. Carter, do you copy?”*

It was the frantic voice of Marcus, the head of building security.

"Speak, Marcus," Alexander pressed the console.

*“Blake didn't try to leave the building, sir. He took the freight elevator down to sub-level two. He’s brought in an unsanctioned tactical squad through the underground loading dock. They’ve jammed internal comms and cut the main grid. They’re moving up through the emergency stairwells right now. They have heavy ordinance.”*

Alexander’s face hardened into stone. "How many?"

*“At least a dozen. Full body armor. Sir, they aren't here to negotiate. They’re blowing the junction boxes on floor eighty. You have less than four minutes before they breach the penthouse.”*

Gunfire echoed over the intercom—a sharp, deafening rattle of automatic weapons, followed by a wet choke, and then dead silence.

"Marcus?" Alexander called out.

Nothing. Just the low hum of the emergency air filtration system.

Sofie began to cry in earnest now, terrified by the raw tension vibrating through Elena's body. Elena felt her knees shaking so violently she could barely stand.

"What do we do?" Elena whispered, looking around the sealed, windowless tomb of the office. "There are no doors. There’s only the elevator and the stairs."

Alexander didn't answer. He walked back into the open vault, grabbed the leather-bound journal, and shoved it into an interior pocket of his overcoat. Then he gently lifted the wooden music box.

He walked back over to Sofie. He knelt down until he was at eye level with the little girl.

"Sofie," Alexander said. His voice was no longer that of a corporate dictator; it was gentle, warm, carrying an inflection that made Elena’s heart ache—it was the exact same tone Jules used to use when he calmed Sofie’s infant colic.

Sofie sniffled, peeking out from Elena’s collarbone. "Uncle?" she murmured instinctively.

The word hit Alexander like a physical blow. He blinked hard, swallowing down an ocean of regret.

"Yes, sweetheart," Alexander whispered. "I'm your Uncle Alex. And I made a promise to your daddy a long time ago that I broke. But I am not going to break this one. Do you trust me?"

Sofie looked at Elena, seeking permission.

Elena looked into the eyes of Alexander Carter. For months, she had looked at his polished shoes and feared his authority. But looking into his eyes now, she saw the same fierce, unyielding devotion that had lived in Jules’s eyes the day he held her hand through twenty hours of labor.

She nodded slowly.

"We trust you," Elena said.

Alexander stood up, drawing his weapon. "Inside the vault. Both of you. Now."

"What?" Elena gasped. "If we lock ourselves in, we'll suffocate!"

"That vault has its own closed-circuit oxygen scrubber built to sustain three people for seventy-two hours," Alexander said, pushing Elena toward the opening. "It was designed by your husband to withstand a bunker-buster bomb. Once that door is sealed from the inside, not even God can open it until the timer expires or Sofie touches the inner panel."

"What about you?" Elena grabbed his sleeve. "You won't fit! Alexander, they have guns!"

Alexander looked down at her hand on his cashmere sleeve, then reached up and gently covered her fingers with his own.

"I spent eight years building an empire on Julian’s blood," Alexander said softly, a dark, terrible smile touching the corners of his lips. "It’s time I paid the rent. Get in, Elena."
