Chapter 7 - The DNA Revelation

The sterile smell of antiseptic hung heavy in the waiting room of the Travis County Forensic Genetics Laboratory. The fluorescent lighting overhead hummed with a monotonous, agonizing buzz that seemed to vibrate straight into the marrow of my bones.

Daniel Mercer sat beside me, reviewing a thick stack of supplemental financial disclosures, while across the room, sitting on opposite ends of a vinyl bench, were Ethan Brooks and Vanessa Carter.

They did not speak to each other. They did not even look at each other.

Vanessa looked completely unrecognizable from the glamorous, glowing influencer who had held court on Instagram forty-eight hours ago. She wore an oversized gray hoodie, dark sunglasses covering her puffy, unmade eyes, and leggings tucked into flat boots. Her phone was clutched in her hand, the screen continuously lighting up with angry messages and notifications that she frantically swiped away. The comment sections on her posts had turned entirely hostile; the leaked surveillance footage had gone viral overnight, turning her into the most mocked woman in Texas.

Ethan sat hunched over, his elbows on his knees, staring blankly at the linoleum floor. His hands were clasped so tightly together that his knuckles were raw red.

A heavy wooden door clicked open, and Dr. Robert Hensley, the chief forensic geneticist appointed by Judge Alvarez, stepped into the waiting room holding a manila folder with a bright red seal.

"Parties in *Brooks v. Brooks and Carter*," Dr. Hensley announced briskly. "Please step into conference room three."

Vanessa stood up abruptly, tugging the hood lower over her head. Ethan moved slowly, like a condemned man walking toward the gallows. Daniel and I followed, taking our seats along the rectangular table inside the private room.

Dr. Hensley remained standing at the head of the table. He broke the red wax seal on the folder with a sharp, clean rip that made Vanessa flinch.

"As ordered by the 345th District Court," Dr. Hensley began, his tone entirely clinical, "our laboratory conducted an expedited, non-invasive cell-free fetal DNA extraction using maternal blood samples drawn yesterday, compared against the reference buccal swabs provided by Mr. Ethan Brooks."

Ethan swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing erratically. "Doctor... please. Just tell us."

Dr. Hensley pulled the primary report from the sleeve and adjusted his reading glasses.

"The test analyzed twenty-four highly polymorphic short tandem repeat genetic markers across the fetal DNA profile and the alleged father’s profile."

Dr. Hensley looked up, his gaze settling directly on Ethan.

"In twenty-two of the twenty-four analyzed markers, there were definitive genetic exclusions between Mr. Ethan Brooks and the fetal DNA."

The air left Ethan’s lungs in a violent, wheezing gasp. "Exclusions? What... what does that mean?"

"It means," Dr. Hensley stated with absolute, unyielding precision, "that the probability of Mr. Ethan Brooks being the biological father of the child carried by Ms. Vanessa Carter is zero point zero percent. Paternity is categorically excluded."

*Zero point zero percent.*

The words hung in the sterile air like an executioner’s blade.

Ethan didn't shout. He didn't roar. He just slowly turned his head toward Vanessa, his face twisted into an expression of such pure, unimaginable agony that for a single second, I almost felt pity for him.

"Zero," Ethan whispered, the word barely audible. "Zero percent."

Vanessa didn't look at him. She kept her sunglasses on, her arms wrapped tightly around her stomach, her jaw set into a hard, defensive clench. "The test is flawed," she said, her voice robotic, stripped of all emotion. "Prenatal blood tests have error margins. Everyone knows that."

"This laboratory operates under an accredited ninety-nine point nine-nine percent accuracy threshold, Ms. Carter," Dr. Hensley replied frostily. "There is no error. Mr. Brooks is not the father."

"Who is he, then?" Ethan suddenly erupted, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate screech as he lunged forward across the table. "Who is the father, Vanessa?! Is it Julian?! Is it Marcus?! Is it the interior designer?! Who was it while I was paying for your luxury suites?!"

"Ethan, stop!" Daniel commanded sharply, standing up and placing a firm hand on Ethan’s shoulder, forcing him back down into his seat before the laboratory security guards could intervene.

Vanessa slowly took off her sunglasses. Her blue eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with dark circles, but entirely devoid of remorse. She looked at Ethan not with shame, but with utter, chilling contempt.

"Does it even matter, Ethan?" she asked, her voice deadly quiet.

Ethan stared at her, tears spilling down his pale cheeks. "Does it matter? You destroyed my marriage! You made me betray Clara! You made me steal from my own company! You told me this was our miracle!"

"I didn't make you do anything," Vanessa sneered, leaning forward, showing her true colors for the final time. "You were desperate to feel like a big man. You wanted a trophy. You wanted someone young and pretty to show off to your developer friends because Clara was smarter than you and you couldn't stand it. You threw your life away because your ego was pathetic, Ethan. Don't blame me for taking what you practically threw at my feet."

Ethan stared at her, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. The realization hit him like a physical blow: she had never loved him. She had never even liked him. To her, he had been nothing more than an easy mark, a gullible stepping stone with a corporate checkbook.

"You're a monster," Ethan choked out, burying his face in his trembling hands, sobbing openly at the conference table.

Vanessa stood up, smoothing her hoodie over her belly. She looked at Daniel, then at me.

"Are we done here?" she asked, her tone icy. "Because I have an appointment with my defense attorney."

"Oh, we’re done here, Ms. Carter," Daniel replied, picking up his briefcase and smiling with cold satisfaction. "Judge Alvarez has already received a digital transmission of these results. And the Travis County District Attorney’s office has officially signed off on your arrest warrant for grand larceny and corporate extortion. The detectives should be waiting for you in the lobby."

Vanessa froze.

The color drained from her face, leaving her as white as the walls around us.

"What?" she breathed.

"Have a pleasant afternoon, Ms. Carter," Daniel said.

I stood up, walked past Ethan without a single backward glance, and pushed open the door to the lobby.

Standing right outside, waiting beside the glass exit doors, were two uniformed Travis County sheriff’s deputies and a plainclothes detective holding a pair of handcuffs.
