Chapter 4 - The Digital War

The video had been live for less than ten minutes, and the viewer counter was already soaring past eighty thousand.
I sat in the passenger seat of Daniel’s sleek black sedan as he navigated through the downtown Austin traffic toward his office on West 6th Street. I propped my phone against the dashboard, watching the spectacle unfold in high-definition video.
Vanessa had found a private corner somewhere outside the courthouse, likely in the back of a luxury rideshare. Her mascara was dramatically smudged beneath her eyes, her blonde hair artfully disheveled, and she was crying directly into the front-facing camera with the desperate, calculated intensity of an actress who knew her career was on the line.
"I am terrified right now, you guys," she sobbed, holding one trembling hand to her throat while her other hand rested dramatically over her belly. "I have never seen such cruelty in my entire life. Clara Brooks has used her wealth, her connections, and her high-priced legal attack dogs to fabricate disgusting, malicious lies about me and my unborn child."
The comment section on the live stream was flying past at a dizzying speed:
*OMG Vanessa are you okay?!*
*What happened in court?! Did they hurt the baby?!*
*Clara Brooks is a psycho ex-wife! She needs to be locked up!*
*Wait, what about the hotel receipts? Is it true about Julian Vance?!*
*Don't believe the media, guys! Stand with Vanessa!*
"She presented altered photos," Vanessa wept, sniffing loudly. "Manipulated surveillance records! Anything to tear down a young mother who dared to find love with a man Clara couldn't keep happy! They are trying to freeze our accounts so I can't afford prenatal care! They are attacking an innocent, defenseless baby!"
Daniel cast a brief, sharp glance toward the phone screen before refocusing on the road. A cold, sardonic smile touched the corners of his lips. "She’s predictable. When the facts are against you, pound the law. When the law is against you, pound the facts. When both are against you, pound the emotional victim drum."
"She’s turning public opinion against us," I said, feeling an old pang of anxiety tighten in my chest. "Daniel, look at those comments. People are sending death threats to your firm’s Instagram page. They’re calling my townhouse management office."
Daniel pulled the car into the underground parking garage of his firm’s high-rise building. He shifted into park, turned off the ignition, and turned toward me, his expression calm and resolute.
"Clara, social media is an echo chamber of fools," he said softly. "The court does not issue rulings based on TikTok comments or Instagram likes. Judge Alvarez issues rulings based on verified affidavits, certified bank ledgers, and forensic data. Vanessa is digging her own grave deeper with every single word coming out of her mouth."
"How?"
"Because while she is crying on camera claiming those records are fabricated, Julian Vance’s legal team is currently preparing a very different statement." Daniel unbuckled his seatbelt. "Come upstairs. We have an unexpected visitor waiting in conference room B."
My heart jumped. "Who?"
"Julian Vance’s personal attorney," Daniel replied, a dangerous glint in his eye. "And unlike Arthur Vance, he actually knows how to protect his client’s empire."
Ten minutes later, I was sitting across a long, polished marble conference table from a woman who looked like she chewed steel for breakfast. Her name was Evelyn Cross, senior partner at one of the top corporate defense firms in the state. Beside her sat a quiet, bespectacled man with two heavy leather cases filled with digital drives.
"Ms. Brooks," Evelyn Cross said, extending a brisk, firm handshake. "I won't waste your time. My client, Julian Vance, is deeply embarrassed by the revelation made in Judge Alvarez’s courtroom today."
"I imagine he is," I said, keeping my posture rigid. "Sleeping with the fiancée of the lead architect on his flagship development isn't exactly the kind of PR Vance Development enjoys."
Evelyn didn't flinch. "Mr. Vance is a private man whose personal indiscretions should never have intersected with corporate governance. However, Ms. Carter’s claims that Mr. Vance 'gifted' her funds through Larkspur Holdings are completely false. Ms. Carter engaged in what our forensic team believes is active corporate extortion."
Daniel leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Extortion? Elaborate, Evelyn."
The bespectacled man opened one of the cases and slid a thick stack of printed text message exchanges and wire transfers across the table toward Daniel.
"In early May," Evelyn explained, "Ms. Carter approached Julian Vance claiming she had obtained confidential architectural blueprints and proprietary engineering assessments indicating severe structural flaws in the South Congress foundation—flaws that Ethan Brooks had allegedly covered up to keep the project on schedule."
My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the papers. "What? That’s impossible. Ethan wouldn't compromise the foundation. I personally reviewed the soil samples and engineering schematics before Ethan signed the final permits."
"Ethan didn't," Evelyn said coldly. "Ms. Carter fabricated the structural reports using forged digital stamps from Brooks Architecture. She threatened Julian with leaking the false reports to the Austin City Council and the press—which would have halted construction and cost Vance Development roughly fifty million dollars in bond penalties—unless Julian wired monthly 'consulting fees' to Larkspur Holdings."
The room seemed to spin around me. The level of sociopathic calculation Vanessa possessed went far beyond simple infidelity or gold-digging. She hadn't just seduced Ethan away from our marriage; she had infiltrated his firm, stolen company digital signatures, and blackmailed the most powerful developer in Central Texas under the guise of an affair.
"And what about the hotel stays?" Daniel asked, his eyes narrowing as he read through the transcripts.
"Julian agreed to meet her in Dallas to negotiate a non-disclosure agreement and recover the forged digital files," Evelyn replied flatly. "Mr. Vance maintains that while there was personal intimacy, the primary motivation for that trip was corporate asset recovery. He was attempting to neutralize her quietly before she ruined the South Congress launch."
Evelyn turned her gaze directly to me.
"Mr. Vance wants this matter buried, Ms. Brooks. But he knows Judge Alvarez will not let Larkspur Holdings disappear without full transparency. We are prepared to turn over all of Vanessa Carter’s extortion messages, her forged engineering documents, and her encrypted correspondence with Marcus Lee to your legal team."
"In exchange for what?" I asked, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
"In exchange for keeping Julian Vance’s name out of the public trial testimony," Evelyn said. "And... should you choose to take control of Brooks Architecture following Ethan Brooks's inevitable bankruptcy, Vance Development will keep the South Congress contract with your new firm."
I looked down at the forged documents. There, stamped on the bottom of a fabricated stress-test analysis, was Ethan’s official digital seal—and beneath it, my own forged authorization initials.
Vanessa had not just played Ethan. She had set up a fail-safe to frame *me* if the extortion scheme went sideways.
"Tell Julian he has a deal," I said, looking Evelyn dead in the eye. "On one condition."
"Name it," Evelyn replied.
"I want the complete, unredacted cell phone backups Vanessa uploaded to Julian’s private cloud server during that Dallas meeting. I want every text, every photo, and every voice memo she ever sent him."
Evelyn glanced at the technician beside her, who gave a single, curt nod.

"They’re already on this drive," Evelyn said, sliding a silver USB stick across the table until it touched my fingertips. "Happy hunting, Ms. Brooks."
