Chapter 2 - The Timeline of Deceit

The silence in the courtroom was so profound that you could hear the faint ticking of the clock on the back wall and the muffled buzz of traffic outside the courthouse windows. Ethan snapped his head toward Vanessa, his jaw hanging slightly open, his brow furrowed in utter bewilderment.
"What is he talking about?" Ethan whispered, the microphone on his table picking up the harsh hiss of his breath. "Vanessa? What Dallas trip?"
Vanessa didn't look at him. She stared straight ahead at Daniel Mercer, her perfectly applied blush standing out against her suddenly bloodless cheeks. "Your Honor, this is private harassment," she stammered, her voice losing its melodic, social-media cadence. "This is an outrageous invasion of privacy! Clara hired private investigators to stalk me!"
"Relevance, Your Honor!" Vance shouted, jumping to his feet. "My client’s paternity is not an issue in this hearing! This is a simple property division!"
"It became an issue, Mr. Vance," Daniel responded with towering authority, "the moment your client filed an emergency motion demanding seventy-five percent of the liquid marital assets on the grounds that he required immediate liquidity to provide a luxury estate for his 'expectant family.' You made the unborn child the primary leverage point for bankrupting my client."
Judge Alvarez looked up from the surveillance photographs Daniel had submitted. Her expression was completely unreadable, which was the most dangerous sign in any Texas courtroom. "The objection is overruled. Ms. Carter, you chose to submit a voluntary affidavit regarding your pregnancy to support Mr. Brooks's hardship petition. You opened this door yourself. Proceed, Mr. Mercer."
Daniel turned toward the projector screen mounted on the wall. With a click of his remote, a crisp image flickered into view.
It was an exterior security still from the Rosewood Mansion valet entrance, timestamped June 12th, 9:43 PM. The woman stepping out of a black Mercedes Maybach was unmistakably Vanessa. She wore an emerald slip dress, her hair swept up in an elegant chignon, laughing as a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal suit wrapped his arm possessively around her waist.
Ethan leaned forward so fast his chair screeched against the linoleum. His eyes bored into the screen, squinting, trying to make sense of what he was seeing. "That’s... that’s Julian Vance," Ethan whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "Julian? From Vance Development?"
Julian Vance was Ethan’s biggest client. He was the billionaire developer who held the commercial contracts for the South Congress luxury high-rise project—the very contract that had made Ethan’s architecture firm famous and wealthy over the past two years. More importantly, Julian Vance was Arthur Vance’s older brother.
Arthur Vance, Ethan’s own attorney, suddenly froze. He stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly, realizing the catastrophic conflict of interest that had just detonated beneath his feet.
"Mr. Julian Vance," Daniel said clearly, addressing the record. "Who funded the Rosewood suite under his corporate account. But that is only the beginning of the timeline, Ms. Carter."
Daniel clicked the remote again.
A new slide appeared. A calendar timeline, highlighted in three distinct colors, alongside corresponding flight manifests and credit card expenditures.
"June twelfth through fourteenth: Dallas, Texas, with Mr. Julian Vance," Daniel recited methodically. "June twentieth through twenty-third: A private villa in Aspen, Colorado. Checked in under the name of Mr. Marcus Lee, a prominent venture capitalist who recently invested two million dollars into Mr. Brooks's expansion fund."
Ethan was practically shaking now. His hands gripped the edge of the defense table, his knuckles turning chalky white. "Marcus? You said you were visiting your sister in Denver, Vanessa! You swore to me you were in Denver!"
"Ethan, stop, don't listen to him—" Vanessa begged, her voice cracking, reaching out to touch his arm.
Ethan flinched away from her touch as if she were burning him. The gallery erupted into furious whispers. The reporters were practically bouncing in their seats, scribbling notes at lightning speed.
"And finally," Daniel continued without missing a beat, clicking to the third slide, "July third through July sixth. The Montage in Laguna Beach. Where Ms. Carter was registered in the private bungalows with Mr. Tyler Hayes, the lead interior designer whom Mr. Brooks hired—and paid a six-figure retainer—on Ms. Carter's personal recommendation."
Daniel clicked the remote one final time, bringing up an enlarged medical document.
"According to the medical records submitted by Ms. Carter’s own obstetrician during her preliminary filings, the date of conception is estimated between June tenth and June twenty-fifth. A window of fifteen days, during which Ms. Carter spent zero nights with Ethan Brooks."
Ethan stood straight up out of his chair. "You lied to me!" he roared across the courtroom, completely forgetting where he was. "You told me the baby was mine! You told me that's why we had to get the house! You made me leave Clara!"
"Mr. Brooks!" Judge Alvarez slammed her gavel down three times with deafening force. "Sit down this instant or I will have the bailiff take you into custody!"
Ethan collapsed back into his seat, burying his face in his hands. His broad shoulders heaved with ragged breaths. The golden boy of Austin architecture, the charismatic visionary who had sneered at me in the hallways just thirty minutes ago, was utterly disintegrating.
Vanessa, on the other hand, was not crying. The panic on her face had suddenly morphed into something cold, feral, and desperate. She looked around the courtroom, realizing that the cameras, the gallery, and the judge were all staring at her not with admiration, but with sheer disgust.
"You think you’ve won, Clara?" Vanessa suddenly hissed across the aisle, dropping all pretense of being a victim. Her voice was venomous, cutting right through the judicial solemnity. "You think having a few receipts makes you better than me? Ethan was bored to death with you! He wanted a woman with ambition, a woman who knew how to secure deals! You were just an anchor dragging him down!"
"Ms. Carter!" Judge Alvarez’s voice was thunderous. "Bailiff, remove Ms. Carter from this courtroom immediately! She is cited for direct contempt of court. Arthur Vance, you will approach the bench immediately to explain this glaring conflict of interest regarding your brother!"
Two armed bailiffs approached Vanessa’s table. She scrambled back, knocking her designer handbag off the table, spilling lipsticks, compact mirrors, and gold credit cards across the floor.
As the bailiffs took her by the arms and escorted her toward the heavy wooden double doors, she turned back one last time, her eyes locking onto mine with burning hatred.
I sat perfectly straight in my chair. For the first time in an entire year, I didn't feel the crushing weight of grief in my chest. I didn't feel the sting of her public insults or the shame she had tried so hard to manufacture for me.
May you like
I simply met her gaze, lifted my chin, and watched her get dragged away into the light of the hallway, where the flashes of dozens of media cameras were already waiting to capture her downfall.
