Chapter 9 - The Verdict

Two weeks later, the sun shone brightly over the steps of the Manhattan Municipal Building.

The city board meeting had concluded thirty minutes prior. The vote on the Hudson Yards revitalization project was unanimous: Bennett Strategic’s environmental assessment was approved in full, and Mercer Development Group was officially dissolved, its assets liquidated to pay restitution to the city and its victims.

Claire walked down the grand stone steps, wearing a sharp white pantsuit that radiated absolute authority and confidence. Flashbulbs popped from reporters gathered at the bottom of the steps, shouting questions about the corporate scandal and her firm's victory.

She answered three quick questions with poise, smiling for the cameras, before slipping past the security barrier and into the back of a waiting black town car.

Adrian was waiting inside.

He wasn't wearing his usual corporate armor; he wore an open-collared navy shirt and a relaxed expression that she had only ever seen in private. As she slid onto the leather seat beside him, he pulled her into his arms, kissing the top of her head.

"You were magnificent," Adrian murmured against her hair.

"I was terrified," Claire confessed, leaning her head against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.

"You didn't look terrified when you faced the reporters."

"That’s because I knew you were waiting in the car to catch me if I stumbled."

Adrian smiled, tilting her chin up so his dark eyes met hers. "I’ll always catch you, Claire. You know that, right?"

"I do," she whispered, her heart swelling with a warmth she had denied herself for six long years.

"Good," he said, leaning down to capture her lips in a tender, lingering kiss that promised a future unburdened by the shadows of their past.

As the town car pulled away from City Hall and merged into the vibrant, sunlit flow of New York traffic, Claire looked out the window at the skyline she loved. For the first time in her life, she wasn't running from anything, and she wasn't building a fortress to keep the world out.

She was simply home.
