Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the autumn air of the West Village carried the crisp, sweet scent of roasting chestnuts and falling leaves.
The rooftop terrace of Claire’s newly expanded brownstone was packed with Manhattan’s elite—mayoral advisors, real-estate investors, close friends, and key partners from Bennett Strategic. But tonight, it wasn't a stiff charity gala or a tense corporate gathering.
It was a celebration.
The Hudson Yards development project was officially breaking ground, and Bennett Strategic was heading the entire sustainable infrastructure initiative.
Claire stood near the glass railing of the terrace, holding a glass of champagne. She wore an emerald-green silk dress that hugged her curves flawlessly—and this time, the hem was completely intact, secured by nothing more than her own unstoppable grace.
Footsteps approached softly behind her.
A familiar pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. A chin rested gently on her shoulder, and the familiar scent of sandalwood and rain filled her senses.
"You're hiding," Adrian whispered in her ear.
"I'm not hiding," Claire smiled, leaning back into his embrace and resting her hands over his. "I'm enjoying the view."
"The view is okay," Adrian teased, pressing a soft kiss to her neck. "Though I think the woman in the emerald dress is distracting everyone from the skyline."
Claire laughed, turning around in his arms to face him. Adrian looked impossibly handsome in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, his dark eyes locked entirely on her, filled with a depth of devotion that still occasionally surprised her.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice softening.
"For what?"
"For everything. For letting me find my own way, for being there when I stumbled, and for never letting go, even when I tried to push you away."
Adrian’s expression softened into something profound and gentle. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat.
He didn't get down on one knee—that wasn't Adrian’s style. Instead, he simply opened the box, revealing a stunning, understated diamond ring that caught the amber glow of the terrace lights.
"I’ve spent half my life building an empire to protect the things that matter to me, Claire," Adrian said, his voice steady and clear above the hum of the party around them. "And I’ve realized that the only thing that ever truly mattered was you. No more running. No more shadows."
He slid the ring onto her finger, the fit absolute perfection.
"Marry me, Claire. Let’s build something that lasts forever."
Tears welled in Claire’s eyes, but this time, there was no fear, no hesitation, no armor left to break.

"Yes," she whispered, smiling through her tears. "About time, Adrian Vale."
When his lips met hers this time, the crowd around them erupted into cheers and applause, glasses clinking in the crisp New York night. Down below, the city stretched out endlessly in a sea of brilliant lights—a city they now owned together, hand in hand, stepping boldly into a future that was entirely, happily, their own.
