Chapter 5 - The Penthouse Fortress

Adrian’s penthouse occupied the top three floors of a glass-and-steel monolith overlooking Central Park. The interior was a study in minimalist luxury—floor-to-ceiling windows, dark hardwood, leather, and abstract art that cost more than a small island.

Yet, for all its opulence, it felt remarkably empty.

Claire stood by the massive glass wall, holding a steaming mug of black coffee Adrian had insisted she drink. Below her, the glittering lights of Manhattan stretched out like a galaxy of fallen stars.

"Your security team cleared my apartment," Claire said, not turning around as she heard the soft click of Adrian’s dress shoes on the hardwood floor. "My servers are back online, and Marcus says the corrupted files were isolated before they hit the SEC."

Adrian walked up beside her, setting a small tube of medicated cream on the marble ledge. He reached out, gently taking her right wrist and applying the soothing ointment to the raw skin left by the zip-ties. His touch was surprisingly tender for a man whose hands had likely broken bones tonight.

"Your firm is safe," Adrian said quietly. "Grant’s assets are already being frozen by my corporate lawyers. By morning, Mercer Development Group will be broken up and sold off for scrap."

Claire looked up at him, the reflection of the city lights dancing in his dark eyes. "You planned this, didn't you? Even before tonight."

"I knew what Grant was planning," Adrian admitted without a shred of remorse. "I was just waiting for him to make a mistake big enough to justify erasing him permanently."

"You're terrifying, Adrian Vale," she said, though there was no heat in her words.

"You used to say I was charming."

"That was before you inherited a criminal empire and started treating corporate espionage like a mob turf war."

Adrian smiled—a genuine, rare smile that transformed his sharp features into something devastatingly handsome. "You always did have a dramatic flair, Claire."

She rolled her eyes, pulling her wrist away gently and setting her mug down. The physical proximity between them was suddenly suffocating. Every time he was near, the last six years evaporated, leaving only the burning, complicated history of their youth.

"I need to sleep," she said, her voice dropping an octave.

"Master bedroom is down the hall on the left," Adrian said, stepping back to give her space. "I’ll be in my study if you need anything. The doors have biometric locks; nobody gets in without my authorization."

Claire turned down the dimly lit hallway. She found the bedroom—a sprawling suite draped in charcoal silks and crisp white linens. She stripped off her ruined gown, put on an oversized silk shirt Adrian’s housekeeper had left out, and crawled into the massive bed.

She expected her mind to race with thoughts of Grant Mercer, the SEC, and the ruined gala.

Instead, all she could smell was the faint scent of sandalwood and rain lingering on Adrian’s jacket.
