Chapter 5 - THE VAULT BENEATH CRYSTAL CITY

The commercial high-rise in Crystal City looked like any other nondescript glass-and-steel corporate headquarters in Northern Virginia. Its lobby boasted polished marble floors, sleek reception desks, and an enormous chrome logo reading *Aegis Dynamics: Securing Tomorrow’s Horizons.*
Beneath that polished facade lay a subterranean fortress.
We arrived in two unmarked civilian SUVs. General Hart had traded his service dress for a dark tactical windbreaker, accompanied by four plainclothes special agents from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS). I walked between them, wearing a borrowed tactical vest under my coat, carrying my diagnostic drive.
As we approached the glass turnstiles, three private security guards in charcoal tactical uniforms stepped forward, their hands resting noticeably close to their sidearms.
“Building is on administrative lockdown,” the lead guard stated, his voice flat and robotic. “No visitors, no exceptions.”
General Hart flashed his gold departmental badge and a sealed federal search warrant signed by the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. “Federal warrant. Stand aside.”
“I don’t care if you have a warrant signed by the President himself,” the guard replied without blinking. “Our contract is direct with the Office of the Undersecretary. We take orders exclusively from Secretary Vance.”
“Undersecretary Vance is currently sitting in a holding cell at Fort McNair on charges of treason,” I said, stepping forward. I held up the biometric keycard I had extracted from Colonel Sloane’s command vehicle at the Fort Meade fire scene. “And this keycard overrides your local perimeter protocols.”
The guard reached for his holster, but the DCIS agents were faster. In a fraction of a second, four Glock 19s were leveled at the guards’ chests.
“Touch that weapon, son, and you spend the next twenty years in Leavenworth,” Hart warned in a low, thunderous tone. “Step away from the console.”
The guards slowly raised their hands, backing away into the corner of the lobby. Major Reynolds immediately took position behind the desk, disabling the lobby alarm and unlocking the freight elevator that descended into Sub-Level 4.
The elevator ride down felt like descending into an abyss. When the steel doors finally slid open with a heavy pneumatic hiss, the air turned freezing cold—cooled by industrial chillers designed to keep massive server farms from overheating.
The corridor stretched fifty yards, lined with reinforced blast doors and fluorescent strip lighting that flickered with an eerie hum. At the far end of the hall stood the master server vault: a vault door of twelve-inch hardened steel, equipped with a retinal scanner and a dual-key cryptographic terminal.
Suddenly, an alarm klaxon began to pulse overhead. A digitized voice echoed through the metal corridor: *WARNING. UNAUTHORIZED FACILITY BREACH DETECTED. PURGE PROTOCOL INITIATED. DATA DESTRUCTION IN ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SECONDS.*
“They triggered the failsafe remotely!” I shouted, sprinting down the hallway toward the vault door.

Through the small observation window, I could see sparks showering from the ceiling of the server room. The internal fire-suppression halon gas canisters were armed, and thermite charges mounted directly above the master hard drives were already beginning to heat up.
If those drives melted, the absolute proof of the network’s crimes would vanish forever.
