Chapter 3 - TARMAC INTERCEPTION

The Sikorsky swept low over the tree line flanking Joint Base Andrews, its heavy rotors beating the Maryland air into a thunderous fury. Through the reinforced viewport, I watched the airfield spread out beneath us like a vast tactical grid. Two Oshkosh Striker crash trucks, their yellow hazard lights strobing against the morning mist, had already positioned themselves diagonally across Taxiway Alpha, boxing in the sleek, unmarked Gulfstream G650.

Hovering barely two hundred feet above the tarmac, the helicopter settled with a bone-jarring rattle near the private jet’s nose. Before the landing gear had fully compressed, the side door rolled back, letting in the cold rush of jet fuel exhaust and crisp autumn wind.

General Hart was the first down the ladder, his service pistol holstered but his hand resting firmly on the grip. I followed right behind him, clutching the carbon-fiber Pelican case containing the decrypted drives and forensic ledger. Four armed Air Force Security Forces personnel in tactical gear fanned out around us, their carbines lowered in a low-ready stance.

The passenger door of the Gulfstream swung open.

Undersecretary Robert Vance stepped onto the airstair. His impeccably tailored charcoal suit was rumpled, his silk tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot with adrenaline. Behind him, clutching a leather briefcase, stood Senator Sterling, his face pale and slick with sweat.

“What is the meaning of this outrage?” Vance bellowed, his voice echoing over the scream of idling turbofans. He pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at General Hart. “Hart! You have violated chain of command! You have grounded an executive transport on diplomatic business! I will have your stars stripped by noon!”

“Step down the stairs, Mr. Undersecretary,” General Hart said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, and chillingly steady. “Your flight clearance has been revoked by direct order of the Joint Chiefs.”

“Under whose authority?” Senator Sterling shouted, descending two steps behind Vance. “I am the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee! This is illegal military interference in civilian government!”

I stepped out from behind General Hart’s broad frame, holding the forensic tablet forward so the sun caught the glowing display. On the screen was the high-resolution wire transfer confirmation: twenty-five million dollars, deposited into Meridian Alpha, signed with Vance’s biometric private key and co-signed by Sterling’s legislative authorization code.

Vance’s gaze dropped to the screen. For a split second, the blood drained entirely from his face. Then his expression morphed into pure, venomous rage.

“Her?” Vance spat, laughing bitterly as he looked past Hart to the security team. “You’re taking orders from a rogue Pentagon auditor? She has no jurisdiction here! Arrest her! She’s not authorized to touch departmental financial nodes! She’s not authorized!”

“Section 10, United States Code, Undersecretary,” I said, stepping closer until I stood at the base of the metal stairs, looking directly up into his eyes. “When defense appropriations are diverted to offshore dummy corporations while our soldiers in the field are issued defective body armor and counterfeit communications gear, the Office of the Special Inspector General holds direct authority over every signature on that manifest. And as of forty-two minutes ago, your credentials were fully terminated.”

“You insolent little—” Vance lunged forward, but two Security Forces airmen instantly closed the gap, their weapon barrels raised to block his path.

“Hands where we can see them, sir,” the team lead barked.

Senator Sterling dropped his briefcase. The leather clasp popped open on the asphalt, spilling half-shredded operational manifests, burner satellite phones, and non-disclosure agreements stamped with the classified black-bar seal of Fort Meade.

“Robert,” Sterling whispered, terror cracking his aristocratic tone. “It’s over. She has the root files.”

“It’s not over,” Vance hissed, glaring down at me with unbridled hatred. “You think taking this jet stops what’s coming, Mercer? You have no idea how deep this foundation runs. You haven’t even scratched the surface of the network.”

May you like

“Then you’ll have plenty of time to explain it to a military tribunal,” Hart said coldly. He turned to the security detail. “Take them into federal custody. Secure all personal electronic devices and transport them to the holding facility at Fort McNair under maximum isolation.”

As the airmen clamped steel zip-ties around Vance’s wrists, the disgraced Undersecretary kept his eyes locked on mine. He leaned in as he was pushed past, his voice a poisonous whisper: “Enjoy your victory while it lasts, Dr. Mercer. The dead hand switch is already ticking.”
