Chapter 7 - The Invitation

Forty-eight hours later, Claire Bennett was back in her modest, sunlit apartment in Center City Philadelphia, trying very hard to pretend her life hadn’t completely derailed.
She stood in her small kitchen, wearing her favorite faded jeans and an oversized university hoodie, stirring a pot of tomato soup while listening to her mother ramble on about furnace filters through the speakerphone resting on the counter.
*“...and I’m just saying, Claire, your cousin Madison called me this morning sounding like she escaped from a spy thriller,”* her mother chattered cheerfully. *“Something about venture capitalists, international hackers, and a billionaire named Damon Vale? Is that the nice young man you told me was a security guard?”*
Claire pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes, groaning softly. “Mom, I told you, it was all a giant misunderstanding. I thought he was rent-a-cop, he let me believe it, and then chaos ensued.”
*“Well, Madison said he’s gorgeous and practically owns half of Pennsylvania,”* her mother noted pointedly. *“Are you going on a second date?”*
“Mom, it wasn’t a first date! It was an industrial espionage hostage situation!”
Before her mother could reply with another matchmaking inquiry, a sharp, polite knock echoed against Claire’s front apartment door.
“Hold on, Mom, someone’s at the door,” Claire said, turning off the stove. “I’ll call you later.”
She walked down the narrow hallway and pulled the door open, expecting a delivery driver or her chatty neighbor from down the hall. Instead, standing on her welcome mat was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a tailored charcoal suit—one of Damon’s elite private security agents, holding a small, heavy black box wrapped in silver ribbon.
“Ms. Bennett?” the man asked politely, nodding his head.
“Uh, yes?” Claire eyed the box suspiciously. “If this is a bomb, I’d like a five-minute warning so I can finish my soup.”
The agent actually cracked a brief, professional smile. “Not a bomb, ma’am. A delivery from Mr. Vale.”
He handed her the box and stepped back, maintaining a respectful distance. Claire took it, closed the door, and carried it back to her kitchen table. With trembling fingers, she untied the silver ribbon and lifted the lid.
Inside sat a stunning, custom-crafted smartwatch made of brushed titanium and dark sapphire crystal—sleek, modern, and undeniably expensive. Resting beneath it was a heavy card embossed with thick black calligraphy:
*‘To replace the one Sterling accused you of stealing. Dinner tonight. 8:00 PM. Don’t wear a navy dress this time; wear something bulletproof. – D.’*
Claire stared at the card, a slow, helpless smile spreading across her face despite her best efforts to remain cynical.
“Arrogant, insufferable billionaire,” she muttered to herself, shaking her head.

Yet, as her fingers traced the cool metal of the watch, she found herself walking toward her bedroom closet to inspect her wardrobe. Apparently, her audition was officially moving to the next round.
