Chapter 5 - The Police at the Gates

The heavy double doors of the grand ballroom swung open with dramatic flair, echoing loudly across the imported marble floor.

Two senior Philadelphia police detectives, accompanied by four uniformed officers, strode into the room with an air of absolute authority. Leading the charge was Detective Vance—no relation to Marcus—a burly, weathered cop with a permanent scowl and a cheap notebook clutched in his beefy hand.

At the edge of the room, standing beside a smug-looking Arthur Sterling, was Victoria Vance. She pointed a manicured finger directly at the stairs leading down to the private elevator.

“That’s her!” Victoria shrieked dramatically. “That’s the woman who caused the disturbance, assaulted a guest, and—according to Mr. Sterling—stole a multi-million-dollar timepiece during the chaos!”

Detective Vance marched over toward the center of the room, planting his heavy boots firmly on the marble.

“Hold it right there,” Detective Vance barked, holding up a heavy hand. “Claire Bennett?”

Claire, who had just stepped out of the subterranean elevator alongside Damon and Marcus, raised an eyebrow. She wiped a speck of invisible dust off her navy dress and sighed heavily.

“If this is about the lemon tarts, I already confessed that they taste like floor wax,” Claire said dryly.

Detective Vance scowled, not amused in the slightest. “Ms. Bennett, you are being formally detained for questioning in connection with grand larceny, assault, and creating a public nuisance during a high-profile charity event. Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”

Arthur Sterling stepped forward from the shadows, sporting a triumphant, venomous smirk. “I told you she was a thief! Nobody steals from Arthur Sterling and gets away with it. Lock her up and throw away the key!”

Before the uniformed officers could take a single step forward, a towering wall of black-suited private security guards—Damon’s personal detail—stepped smoothly into formation, blocking the police officers’ path with cold, intimidating precision.

The tension in the ballroom snapped like a stretched guitar string.

“Detective,” a voice cut through the silence. It was quiet. Calm. Absolutely lethal.

Damon Vale stepped past his guards, walking slowly toward the detective. The sheer gravitational pull of his presence made the seasoned police officer instinctively take a half-step backward.

“Mr. Vale,” Detective Vance said, clearing his throat nervously. “We’re just executing a citizen’s arrest warrant filed by Mr. Sterling. The woman is a suspect in a major theft.”

“A suspect based on the word of a man who was just caught red-handed attempting to execute a hostile corporate cyber-attack against my company,” Damon replied smoothly, his eyes narrowing into dangerous obsidian slits.

Arthur Sterling’s smug smirk instantly melted into sheer panic. “That—that’s a lie! He’s lying to protect his little girlfriend!”

“Silence, Sterling,” Damon snapped, his voice cracking like a whip. He turned back to the detective, pulling a sleek tablet from his inner jacket pocket and handing it over. “Here is the complete digital forensic log, certified by our cybersecurity team and backed by federal tracking protocols. It details an unauthorized, malicious data extraction originating from IP addresses directly tied to Sterling’s investment firm less than twenty minutes ago.”

Detective Vance stared down at the glowing tablet, his eyes darting across the code and corporate metadata. Color rapidly drained from his face.

“Good lord,” the detective whispered.

“Furthermore,” Damon continued, stepping even closer, his voice dropping to a low, threatening rumble, “my estate’s high-definition security cameras captured every second of the medical emergency. They clearly show Ms. Bennett performing life-saving CPR while Mr. Sterling hovered over her like a vulture, screaming false accusations because he dropped his watch during his own panicked attempt to flee the scene of his corporate crimes.”

Damon turned his head slightly, glaring straight at Victoria Vance. “And as for the charge of public nuisance and assault? The only person who assaulted anyone tonight was Mr. Sterling, who violently grabbed Ms. Bennett’s wrist while she was recovering from saving his miserable life.”

The entire ballroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop on the marble miles away.

Arthur Sterling backed away slowly, shaking his head in absolute terror. “No—no, this is a setup! This is a conspiracy!”

Detective Vance looked up from the tablet, his expression hardening as he snapped his notebook shut. He turned around and pointed directly at Sterling.

“Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, attempted data theft, and filing a false police report,” the detective barked.

Two uniformed officers lunged forward, grabbing Sterling by the arms and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists as he shrieked and flailed like a toddler having a tantrum. As they dragged him past Claire, Sterling shot her a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that could have curdled milk.

Victoria Vance took one look at the disaster unfolding, tucked her designer handbag under her arm, and sprinted out the front doors faster than an Olympic sprinter.

Detective Vance turned back to Damon and Claire, clearing his throat awkwardly. “Apologies for the misunderstanding, Mr. Vale. Ms. Bennett… we won’t be needing any further questioning.”

“Thank you, Detective,” Damon said coldly. “Now, get out of my house.”

Without another word, the police officers turned and marched out, hauling a kicking and screaming Sterling in their wake.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, leaving Damon, Marcus, and Claire standing alone in the massive, quiet ballroom.

Claire let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders finally dropping from their tense, defensive posture. She looked at Damon, a slow, amused smile creeping onto her lips.

“Well,” Claire chuckled softly. “That escalated quickly.”

Damon turned to look at her, the lethal CEO mask completely dissolving, replaced by a warm, intense gaze that made Claire’s breath catch in her throat.

“Are you alright?” he asked, stepping closer and gently—very gently—touching the bandaged wrist he had wrapped earlier.

“I’ll survive,” Claire whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. “Though I have to say, Mr. Vale… your idea of a first date is wildly unconventional.”

Damon’s lips curved into a slow, breathtaking smile.

“Who said anything about a date?” he murmured softly. “This was just the audition.”
