Chapter 6 - The Morning After the Storm

The morning sun cast a brilliant, golden glow across the manicured lawns and stone terraces of the Vale estate. Inside the master study, however, the lighting was strictly utilitarian, dominated by the pale blue glare of computer monitors and the rich aroma of freshly brewed, high-end Colombian coffee.

Claire Bennett sat cross-legged on the oversized leather sofa, wearing a crisp, oversized white button-down shirt that clearly belonged to Damon—her own dress having suffered irreparable crystal damage the night before. A steaming ceramic mug of coffee sat in her hands as she watched Damon pace slowly across the hardwood floor.

“Sterling’s board of directors has already ousted him,” Damon said into his encrypted satellite phone, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of a man who owned the room—and half the city besides. “Freeze his assets, audit his subsidiaries, and make sure our legal team buries him so deep he won’t see daylight until he’s collecting social security. Done.”

He clicked the phone off, tossed it onto the glass desk, and pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a heavy sigh of exhaustion. It was the first time all morning that he actually looked human rather than an unyielding corporate titan.

Claire took a slow sip of her coffee, her eyes tracking his movements. “You know, for a billionaire tech mogul, you don’t sleep much, do you?”

Damon walked over to the coffee station, poured himself a black mug, and leaned against the edge of the desk, looking down at her. “Sleep is an inefficient use of time when there are hostile entities trying to dismantle your life’s work.”

“That sounds exhausting,” Claire said lightly. “No wonder you have resting-grump face. You need a vacation. Or a puppy. Or a hobby that doesn’t involve international logistics espionage.”

Damon let out a short, genuine bark of laughter. He crossed his arms, studying her with an intensity that made Claire acutely aware she was wearing his shirt and nothing else.

“And what about you, nurse? Your shift at St. Catherine’s started twenty minutes ago. Aren’t you going to be in deep trouble for missing work?”

Claire choked slightly on her coffee, coughing into her fist as her eyes went wide. “Oh, crap! My shift!”

She scrambled off the couch in a panic, spilling a few drops of coffee onto the rug, and looked around frantically for her shoes. “What time is it? Why didn’t anybody wake me up? My supervisor is going to hang me by my stethoscope!”

Damon watched her frantic sprint with an amused, infuriatingly calm smile. He reached behind his desk, picked up a sleek car key fob, and tossed it through the air. Claire caught it reflexively against her chest.

“Relax,” Damon said smoothly. “I called the hospital director at 5:00 AM, informed him that you were on special executive detail for Vale Global, and granted you a paid forty-eight-hour leave of absence.”

Claire stopped dead, lowering the keys and staring at him in disbelief. “You did *what*?”

“I managed your schedule,” he repeated casually. “You earned it after performing emergency triage and saving my company from a hostile cyber-attack. Besides, St. Catherine’s foundation is one of my primary philanthropic projects. The director didn’t object.”

Claire threw her hands up in the air, exasperated. “You can’t just buy my hospital shifts like a pack of gum, Damon!”

“Watch me,” he replied, his dark eyes twinkling with playful arrogance.

Before Claire could launch into a well-deserved lecture on boundaries and billionaire entitlement, the heavy mahogany door swung open. Marcus Vance walked in, holding a thick manila folder and a steaming cup of tea.

“Boss, we have an issue,” Marcus said without preamble. “Sterling’s legal team just filed a counter-claim, claiming our cybersecurity sweep was an illegal intrusion of their private servers.”

Damon’s easygoing demeanor vanished instantly, replaced once more by the cold, calculating CEO. “File a motion to dismiss under federal emergency asset protection statutes. Let them try to fight the Department of Justice.”

“Way ahead of you,” Marcus nodded, handing the folder over. Then, he glanced sideways at Claire, a faint, knowing smirk crossing his face. “Morning, Ms. Bennett. Hope you slept well.”

Claire felt a hot flush creep up her neck. “I slept on a couch, Marcus, fully clothed, while your boss plotted world domination from his desk.”

“Of course you did,” Marcus said smoothly, his tone suggesting he believed absolutely none of it. “Car is prepped whenever you’re ready to head back to your apartment, Ms. Bennett. Mr. Vale has instructed our private detail to ensure your safety.”

“I can take an Uber, Marcus,” Claire sighed.

“Cell service is jammed within three miles,” Damon reminded her with a smug, knowing smirk.

Claire glared at him, absolutely defeated by his logic. “I hate you.”

May you like

“No, you don’t,” Damon murmured, stepping closer until the air between them grew thick and electric. “You find me entirely fascinating.”
