Chapter 5 - Journey into the Cascades

The armored Mercedes SUV cut through the winding, fog-drenched mountain roads of the Cascade Range.

Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Naomi sat in the passenger seat, staring out the rain-streaked window at the towering, dark pine trees rushing by in the headlights. Daniel drove with absolute focus, his knuckles white against the steering wheel.

“My brother,” Naomi said suddenly, breaking the long silence. “Leo. Is he safe?”

Daniel kept his eyes on the road. “I had a detail assigned to his apartment complex two hours ago. He’s being watched by my most trusted men. No one touches your family, Naomi. That’s a promise written in blood.”

“And how am I supposed to trust a promise written in blood by a mafia boss?” she asked, not looking at him.

“Because,” Daniel replied softly, “you’ve seen me at my worst. You’ve seen me lie, manipulate, and shatter. And yet, you’re still sitting here holding me accountable. You don’t fear my power, Naomi. You challenge my humanity. That makes your word worth more than anything in my vault.”

Naomi turned her head to look at him in the dim dashboard light. The harsh angles of his face were softened by the shadows. For a fleeting second, she felt the dangerous, magnetic pull that had drawn her to him in the first place—the tragic, broken intensity of a man who had never known how to be loved without owning.

“You’re sick, Daniel,” she whispered.

“I know,” he replied without hesitation. “You’re the only cure I’ve ever found.”

An hour later, the SUV turned down a heavily forested, unmarked gravel road hidden behind a rusted logging gate. It wound up a steep incline before opening into a clearing hidden beneath a massive rock overhang. A sprawling, modern cabin built of cedar and steel blended seamlessly into the cliffside.

As they stepped out of the vehicle, the crisp, pine-scented mountain air hit their lungs.

“Welcome to nowhere,” Daniel said, punching a security code into the heavy iron front door.

Inside, the cabin was warm, lit by a massive stone fireplace and furnished with leather couches and towering bookshelves. It felt less like a criminal’s bolt-hole and more like a sanctuary.

“You stay in the master bedroom,” Daniel said, setting his keys on the entry table. “I’ll sleep on the couch out here.”

“No,” Naomi said, stopping him. “We need to talk about who betrayed you at Crescent Harbor. If your own executives are selling you out to a rival faction, we need to figure out who it is before they clean out your accounts and frame you for federal crimes.”

Daniel paused, looking at her with a mixture of awe and disbelief. “You want to help me investigate?”

“I want this nightmare to end so I can go back to my boring, normal life,” Naomi corrected him sharply. “Helping you is the fastest way to get my life back.”
