Chapter 4 - The Rat in the House

The rain continued to lash against the broken glass wall, sending freezing gusts of wind swirling through the penthouse.

Naomi shivered, wrapping her arms around herself. The romance—if it could ever be called that—was completely dead, replaced by a grim alliance forged in violence.

“Your own company,” Naomi said, her voice laced with bitter irony. “You built an empire, Daniel, and you didn't even notice the foundation was rotting from the inside.”

Daniel didn’t snap back. He walked over to the ruined kitchen island, picked up his encrypted satellite phone, and punched in a rapid sequence of numbers. “Marcus. Get the clean-up crew to the penthouse. Now. And lock down every server at Crescent Harbor. I want every log, every financial transfer, and every security badge swipe from the last six months on my desk by sunrise.”

He hung up without waiting for a reply. He turned back to Naomi, his face carved from granite.

“You can’t stay here,” Daniel said flatly. “Even if you hate me, even if you never want to look at me again, my penthouse is compromised. My enemies know you’re my weakness.”

“I’m not your weakness, Daniel,” Naomi snapped, stepping closer, her finger pointing at his chest. “Stop saying that! I am a human being. I have a mother in Tacoma, a brother in college, and a life I actually liked before you crashed into my alleyway. I am not a piece of collateral damage you get to manage.”

Daniel flinched, the harsh truth of her words cutting deeper than any knife wound. “You’re right. I’m sorry. But right now, outside these doors, operatives are hunting anyone associated with me. If you walk out into the street alone, you won't survive twenty minutes.”

Naomi stared at him, weighing her options. Her car was parked three blocks away in a public garage, likely watched. Her apartment was no longer safe. She was trapped.

“Fine,” she hissed, her jaw tight. “Where do we go?”

“My safe house,” Daniel said, walking toward the private elevator. “In the Cascade foothills. Completely off the grid.”

“Lead the way,” she muttered. “And Daniel? If you try any more of your manipulative mind games on the way... I swear to God, I’ll take that gun you left on the counter and use it myself.”

Daniel gave a grim, humorless nod. “Fair enough.”
