Chapter 8 - The Sting

Gregory spun to face me, his eyes wide with animal panic. His chest heaved beneath his cummerbund.

"Elena... wait... that’s not..." he stammered, words failing him for the first time in his life.

"Is something wrong, darling?" I asked loudly enough for Arthur Vance to turn his head toward us.

"Ward! You made it!" Arthur boomed, rising from his chair with the commanding presence of an old-money patriarch. "Come over here, son. We were just discussing the third-quarter adjustments Brooke Taylor submitted this morning."

Gregory turned white as salt. "Brooke... Brooke Taylor?"

"Yes," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing slightly into cold slits. "She dropped off an entire duplicate ledger at my penthouse suite three hours ago, Gregory. Accompanied by two forensic investigators from the State Attorney General’s financial crimes division."

The ballroom suddenly seemed to lose all its warmth. Gregory took a stumbling half-step backward, bumping into a waiter carrying a tray of champagne. Glasses shattered against the polished parquet floor with a resounding crash that turned heads across the room.

"Arthur, please," Gregory whispered, his voice cracking with desperation. "Let’s talk in private. There’s been a catastrophic misunderstanding—"

"There is no misunderstanding, Mr. Ward," a new voice rang out clearly over the murmur of the crowd.

Maya Sterling stepped forward from the perimeter of the banquet table, accompanied by two uniformed police officers and a civilian process server holding a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents.

The managing partners of Gregory’s firm hurried over, their faces thunderous. "What is the meaning of this? Who are you?"

"My name is Maya Sterling, representing Elena Ward," Maya announced with effortless authority, her voice cutting through the hushed silence of the ballroom. "I am serving Gregory Ward with an emergency court injunction issued by Judge Alvarez of the Family and Superior Court."

The process server stepped forward and forcefully shoved the thick packet of papers against Gregory’s chest.

Gregory instinctively caught them, his hands shaking so violently that several sheets spilled across the floor.

"You are hereby served with an emergency restraining order, an immediate freeze on all personal and LLC business accounts, and an ex-parte order granting Elena Ward temporary sole custody of your minor child and exclusive possession of the marital estate," Maya stated, projecting her voice so that every titan of industry in the room heard every single syllable.

"This is insane!" Gregory screamed, his veneer of sophistication completely disintegrating. Sweat poured down his temples, ruining his hair. He turned to the managing partners. "She’s crazy! She’s mentally unstable, I told you all she was having a breakdown! Don't listen to this!"

"Shut up, Gregory," Arthur Vance growled, his voice deep and menacing.

Arthur turned to his daughter, Chloe, who was suddenly cowering in her chair, realizing the avalanche was about to consume her as well.

"Take that necklace off," Arthur ordered his daughter, his voice like cracking ice.

"Dad, no, Greg gave it to me—"

"I said take it off!" Arthur roared. "That piece belongs to Mrs. Ward, paid for with funds stolen from joint marital accounts and Vance Logistics corporate reserves!"

Tears of humiliation finally broke across Chloe Vance’s cheeks. With trembling fingers, she unlatched the rose-gold clasp and dropped the sapphire pendant onto the white linen tablecloth.

I stepped forward slowly, the crowd parting around me like the Red Sea. The room was dead silent save for the sound of Gregory’s ragged, terrified breathing.

I walked up to the table, picked up the teardrop sapphire, and felt its cool weight in my palm.

Turning to Gregory, I looked directly into his ruined, pleading eyes.

"You told me it was at the jeweler’s getting repaired," I said, my voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of mercy. "You should have known, Greg. I’m a nurse. I can always tell when something is dead beyond resuscitation."

Two federal agents in plainclothes stepped through the side doors, displaying gold badges to the hotel security.

"Gregory Ward? We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of corporate extortion, wire fraud, and grand larceny."

As the handcuffs clicked around Gregory’s wrists, the entire ballroom erupted into chaos. Gregory thrashed against the agents' grip, screaming my name, begging me to call Maya off, promising everything, threatening everything.

I didn't turn back to look at him once.

I slipped the sapphire necklace into my evening clutch, turned on my heel, and walked out into the cool night air.
