Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The audio and video files were automatically backed up to a secure remote server. I sat in my car for twenty more minutes, forcing my breathing to regulate until my pulse dropped back to a steady sixty beats per minute. A nurse cannot afford panic during cardiac arrest, and right now, Gregory’s life as he knew it was flatlining—he just didn't know it yet.

I picked up my phone and dialed the number Claire had texted me an hour earlier.

"Maya Sterling’s office," a crisp voice answered.

"My name is Elena Ward," I said. "Claire Henderson told me to call."

Ten minutes later, I was sitting across from Maya Sterling in a high-rise office overlooking the city harbor. Maya was a woman in her late forties with razor-sharp silver streaks in her dark hair, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. Her reputation as the state’s most lethal family law attorney was legendary; husbands who tried to conceal assets from her usually ended up bankrupt or behind bars.

I laid my iPad on her glass desk and pressed play on the surveillance video from twenty minutes ago.

Maya watched the footage in silence. She didn't flinch, didn't gasp. Her only reaction was a slow, calculating arch of her left eyebrow when Gregory boasted about freezing our joint assets and sending Toby to boarding school.

"He's a forensic accountant," Maya said when the clip finished, tapping her pen against the desk. "Which means he knows how to manipulate numbers, but it also means his hubris will be his executioner. He thinks he’s playing checkers against someone who doesn't even know the rules."

"I brought his paper trail," I said, sliding the thumb drive across the mahogany table. "Three shell companies in Delaware. Offshore routing numbers. Invoices for high-end luxury goods under Chloe Vance’s name, paid from our joint accounts. And the lease guarantee for her apartment."

Maya plugged the drive into her terminal. As she skimmed the bank transfers and audited spreadsheets, a cold, predatory smile touched her lips.

"Mrs. Ward... do you know who Chloe Vance’s father is?" Maya asked suddenly.

I blinked. "No. I assumed she was just an associate at his firm."

"Chloe Vance is the daughter of Arthur Vance," Maya said, turning her monitor toward me. "The CEO of Vance Logistics—the single largest corporate client Gregory’s accounting firm represents. Gregory didn't just pick a random mistress. He seduced the daughter of his firm's golden goose."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying brilliance. Gregory’s ambition was limitless. He wasn't just having an affair for pleasure; he was attempting to ingratiate himself into the Vance empire. If he married Chloe Vance, he wouldn't just be an equity partner—he would be heir to a multi-million-dollar board seat.

"And he’s financing his seduction of the boss’s daughter using your money," Maya added, her eyes gleaming. "The fraud here is staggering. Not only is it marital dissipation of assets—which we will recover in full, dollar for dollar—but siphoning joint marital funds into third-party LLCs to hide them prior to a planned divorce filing constitutes intentional fraud on the court."

"Can he get custody of Toby with his false allegations?" That was the only question that truly mattered to me. The money, the house, the jewelry—Gregory could drown in them for all I cared. Toby was my entire world.

Maya leaned forward, her expression turning deadly serious. "Mrs. Ward, in forty-eight hours, I will have an emergency forensic restraining order prepared. We will file a petition for immediate temporary sole physical and legal custody based on parental unfitness, intentional dissipation of marital estates, and child endangerment. You said he brought this woman into your home while Toby was there in the past?"

"Toby told me she played in my bedroom while I was at work," I said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.

"Then we will subpoena your home security footage, depose the nanny, and question the preschool teachers regarding Gregory’s absence. But before we drop this hammer, we need to let him walk directly into the snare he laid for you."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"His firm’s annual celebration gala is this Friday night," Maya said, a wicked spark in her eyes. "Arthur Vance will be there. The managing partners will be there. Gregory believes he has you completely subdued. Let him keep believing that for three more days. When we strike, we won't just win the divorce, Elena. We will incinerate his entire existence."

I looked out the window at the harbor below. The water was dark, deep, and relentless.

"Tell me what I need to do," I said.
