Chapter 5 - An Unlikely Ally

When I arrived home that evening, the house was empty.

Chloe had departed, and Gregory had left a note on the island counter: *Working late on the Vance Logistics quarterly audit. Don't wait up, honey. Love you.*

The master bedroom had been hastily tidied, but the scent of coconut and vanilla still hung in the air like cheap room spray. I stripped the sheets from our king-sized bed, carried them down to the laundry room, and threw them directly into the trash incinerator in the backyard. I replaced them with a crisp, brand-new set from the linen closet.

My phone chimed on the counter. It was a text from an unknown number.

*Elena? This is Claire. Someone wants to speak with you. Don't freak out. I’m sending her to your house right now.*

Ten minutes later, headlights swept across my living room ceiling.

I opened the front door, expecting Claire. Instead, standing on my porch in the cool evening mist was a young woman with dark hair pulled into a severe ponytail, clutching a leather portfolio to her chest. She looked exhausted, nervous, and utterly terrified.

"Mrs. Ward?" she whispered.

"Who are you?" I demanded, keeping the screen door latched.

"My name is Brooke Taylor," she said, her voice shaking. "I’m a junior auditor at Gregory’s firm. I’ve been working under him for two years. Claire found me through the firm’s public registry after she recognized my name on the shell corporation filings."

I stared at her for a beat before unlocking the door. "Come inside."

Brooke sat at my kitchen table, her hands trembling as I set a cup of hot chamomile tea in front of her. She looked around the warm, immaculate kitchen with guilt written across every feature of her face.

"I didn't know he was doing this to you," Brooke began, her voice cracking. "I swear to God, Mrs. Ward, I had no idea until three weeks ago."

"What did you find, Brooke?" I asked gently, sitting across from her.

Brooke unzipped her portfolio and pulled out a stack of internal audit printouts marked *CONFIDENTIAL.*

"Gregory isn't just funneling your joint money to Chloe Vance," Brooke revealed, leaning closer. "He’s cooking the books for Vance Logistics. Chloe’s father, Arthur Vance, has been skimming corporate tax withholdings for years. Gregory discovered it six months ago during a routine audit. Instead of reporting it to the IRS and the firm’s ethics board, Gregory used the information to blackmail Arthur Vance."

I stared at her in shock. "Blackmail?"

"Gregory told Arthur that he would bury the discrepancies in exchange for a twenty-percent private equity stake in Vance Logistics’ offshore holdings," Brooke explained, her hands gripping the tea mug. "And to cement his position, Gregory targeted Chloe. Chloe Vance thinks Gregory is hopelessly in love with her, that he’s this sophisticated older man who’s going to rescue her from her domineering father. But Gregory has been using Chloe as leverage to keep Arthur from cutting him out of the scheme."

I leaned back in my chair, the sheer magnitude of Gregory’s corruption washing over me.

He wasn't just a cheating husband with an overinflated ego. He was a corporate extortionist operating on a wire so thin that the slightest gust of wind would send him plummeting into federal prison.

"Why are you helping me, Brooke?" I asked, looking into the young woman’s eyes. "If this blows up, the firm will face an investigation."

Brooke’s eyes welled with tears. "Because Gregory forced me to sign off on two of the fraudulent shell company transfers. He told me that if I didn't verify the ledger balances, he would fire me, revoke my CPA recommendation, and tell the partners I was the one embezzling. He threatened to ruin my entire life before my career even started."

I reached across the table and covered her trembling hand with mine.

"He’s not going to ruin you, Brooke," I said, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Because tomorrow morning, you’re going to walk into Maya Sterling’s office with those files. You’re going to turn state's evidence before Gregory even realizes the audit has breached."

Brooke wiped a tear from her cheek and let out a shaky breath. "He thinks he’s invincible, Mrs. Ward."

May you like

"Everyone thinks they're invincible," I said, a slow, icy smile spreading across my face, "until the monitor flatlines."
