Chapter 31 - The Descent from the Sky

The helicopter hovered low over the front lawn, the deafening roar of its twin turbines shaking the very foundations of the ancestral home. A heavy nylon rope dropped from the open side hatch, followed instantly by three figures clad in heavy tactical gear, sliding down with military precision into the muddy grass.

"Federal marshals! Nobody move!" a voice bellowed through a high-powered electronic megaphone, cutting cleanly through the storm. "Drop your weapons! Put your hands on your heads where we can see them!"

Julian’s mercenaries didn't hesitate. Outnumbered, outgunned, and caught in the absolute glare of federal air support, the two men nearest the porch dropped their assault rifles into the mud and raised their hands.

Julian panicked. Instead of surrendering, he lunged toward the open door of the Maybach, his fingers clawing for the door handle. "No! You don't understand, I have diplomatic immunity through—"

He didn't get to finish the sentence. Evelyn Sutton stepped smoothly into his path, her face a mask of absolute, chilling calm. With a sudden, surprising sweep of her foot, she hooked Julian’s ankle, sending him sprawling hard face-first into the muddy gravel. The heavy leather briefcase flew from his grip, bursting open upon impact to scatter dozens of old financial ledgers and blue-backed stock certificates across the wet earth.

"Diplomatic immunity expired about ten minutes ago, Julian," Evelyn said coldly, looking down at him as he groaned in the mud. She kicked the scattered papers away with the toe of her designer heel. "And you're a terrible investment."

Two federal marshals in full riot gear jogged up the driveway, their weapons drawn, their boots splashing through the puddles. They hauled Julian roughly to his feet, slamming him against the side of the armored car and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, corporate wire fraud, and interstate kidnapping," the lead marshal declared, reading him his rights with brisk efficiency.

I ignored the chaos unfolding around us and rushed past the marshals toward the lead agent in charge—a tall, sharp-featured woman with iron-gray hair tucked under her tactical cap, wearing a federal insignia on her vest.

"Agent Vance—are you with the federal task force?" I asked, my voice cracking with desperation. "My son, Miles Miller! He was abducted less than an hour ago. Julian said he was taken to a federal holding cell twenty miles north—is he safe?"

The female agent lowered her notepad and looked at me with a softening expression. "Mrs. Miller? Stand down. Your son is safe. We intercepted the vehicle transporting him ten minutes before it reached the airstrip. He’s currently in an armored transport vehicle heading this way under federal protection."

A massive wave of relief washed over me so violently my knees nearly buckled. I caught myself against the fender of the nearest SUV, closing my eyes as hot tears mingled with the cold rain on my face.

"Thank God," I whispered. "Thank God."

"Don't thank God yet, Martha," a sharp, raspy voice muttered from behind me.

I turned my head. Eleanor Vance was standing near the scattered papers on the ground, her silver cane pointing toward a single sheet of paper that had blown away from the rest of the briefcase—a paper bearing a handwritten signature that changed everything.
