Chapter 30 - The Airstrip Ambush

Julian slammed his hand onto the hood of Evelyn’s Maybach, breathing heavily, his chest heaving under his ruined designer shirt. The rain plastered his dark hair across his forehead, stripping away the polished illusion of invulnerability he had worn all evening.

Evelyn stepped away from him, her umbrella tilting back as she stared at him with undisguised contempt. "Compromised? What are you talking about, Julian? I gave you a clear window. The federal transport permits were filed under a shell corporation three days ago."

"Not the feds," Julian hissed, glancing frantically over his shoulder toward the dark, tree-lined valley road. "Federal agents I could have bought off. This wasn't the FBI. It was the *SEC enforcement division*—backed by an entirely different tier of federal marshals. They had the perimeter locked down before my car even reached the tarmac. They seized the Cessna."

Eleanor let out a sharp, dry bark of laughter, leaning heavily on her silver cane. "Did you really think the Vance family only had enemies in local politics, Julian? Arthur Vance spent forty years building alliances in federal oversight committees. You thought you could smuggle state-level corporate plunder across international borders without tripping every tripwire in Washington?"

Julian spun around, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he glared at Eleanor. "Shut up, you old witch! If I go down for corporate asset stripping, I’m taking every single one of you with me—starting with your precious great-nephew!"

"Where is Miles?" I demanded, surging forward past the ring of tactical guards. Two of them instantly leveled their rifles at my chest, but I didn't stop. "Where is my son, Julian?!"

Julian laughed hysterically, backing away toward the open door of the Maybach. "Your son is sitting in a federal holding cell twenty miles north, Mrs. Miller! Along with the master files linking your family to every illegal shell company in Delaware. The game is over! The board is wiped clean!"

Before Julian could dive back into the car, a deafening roar tore through the night sky from above.

We all froze, looking up. Breaking through the low-hanging, bruised clouds came a massive, matte-black Sikorsky helicopter, its powerful searchlights instantly flooding the entire estate in a blinding, merciless white glare. The wash from the rotor blades whipped the rain into a furious horizontal sheet, tearing umbrellas from hands and flattening the tall oaks along the perimeter.

Printed in bold, silver letters along the side of the fuselage was a seal that made Julian’s face drain of all remaining color.
