Chapter 23 - The Vault of Secrets

The beam of Miles’s flashlight bounced frantically against the pitted iron surface of the safe as he ran his fingers along the rusted lower hinge of the heavy door.

"Mom, I found the panel!" Miles shouted up from the cellar, his voice echoing off the damp brick walls. "There's a tiny sliding plate—it's rusted shut!"

"Use the tip of the crowbar!" I yelled back, keeping one eye on the front window where the massive black SUV had just crunched to a halt on the gravel drive. The doors didn't open immediately; instead, the engines idled with a deep, menacing rumble that rattled the glass in the frames.

Above me, Eleanor stood by the kitchen counter, her hands resting firmly on her silver-topped cane, her eyes fixed on the front door with cold, lethal determination.

"They've brought the local sheriff," Eleanor murmured, her voice unnervingly calm. "I just saw the cruiser pull in behind Julian's sedan. Deputy Miller. Arthur used to pay his bar tab back in '88. Men like that don't care about deeds, Elizabeth—they care about who signs the county budget."

"Miles! We are out of time!" I called down into the dark gap of the floorboards.

*Clack.*

A sharp metallic snap echoed from the cellar.

"Got it!" Miles yelled. He jammed the heavy brass key Eleanor had given him into the exposed mechanical slot behind the hinge. With a stiff, agonizing resistance, the key turned one full rotation.

A deep, pneumatic hiss sighed from the heart of the safe, as century-old seals broke open. The heavy iron door clicked, swung outward by an inch, and revealed the dark, velvet-lined interior.

Inside sat a stack of thick, leather-bound ledgers tied with faded red ribbon, alongside a heavy canvas bag that clinked with the unmistakable weight of old gold coins. But resting right on top was a large, manila envelope stamped with a red wax seal bearing the crest of the Vance shipping empire.

"I see it!" Miles reached inside, his fingers wrapping around the thick manila envelope just as heavy, pounding blows slammed against the front door upstairs.

*Bang! Bang! Bang!*

"Open up! County Sheriff's Department! We have a warrant for immediate property inspection!" a gruff, authoritative voice shouted through the reinforced timber.

"Elizabeth! Open this door or we breach!" Deputy Miller’s voice bellowed, followed by the heavy thud of a battering ram being positioned against the porch pillars.

"Mom! What do I do?" Miles yelled up, holding the heavy manila envelope high above his head in the beam of the flashlight.

"Take the ledgers and get out through the drainage culvert!" I shouted down, my heart threatening to burst from my chest. "Hurry, Miles! Crawl out to the barn before they surround the house!"

"I'm not leaving you here with them!"

"Go! That's an order!" I slammed my foot down near the edge of the opening, signaling the finality of my choice.

Through the kitchen archway, I heard the splintering crack of the front door yielding to the battering ram. The brass deadbolt snapped out of the frame with a shower of wood chips and flying screws.

Eleanor didn't panic. She calmly lifted her silver-topped cane, planted it firmly on the rug, and turned to face the living room archway as three uniformed deputies, led by Julian in his immaculate suit, flooded into the house.

"Well, well, well," Julian sneered, stepping past Deputy Miller with a slow, predatory stride. "It seems we caught the squatters red-handed."
