Chapter 5 - The Trial of Public Opinion

Within twenty-four hours, the fall of the Vance dynasty was the top headline on every news channel, gossip blog, and social media platform in the country.
Kelly had uploaded the full, unedited video of Wendy striking Fiona—along with the audio of her chilling threat—to TikTok and Instagram. By the next morning, the hashtag `#JusticeForFiona` had amassed over 50 million views.
The internet, usually divided on family disputes, was in a state of absolute collective fury.
*“This monster grandmother deserves prison!”* one viral comment read with over 200,000 likes. *“And the spineless husband should lose everything! Go get 'em, mama bear!”*
Social media detectives dug up old interviews of Wendy bragging about her corporate dominance, turning her into the ultimate internet villain. Memes of her face covered in her own birthday cake flooded feeds across Facebook, shared millions of times by angry mothers and domestic abuse survivors who saw their own struggles reflected in my story.
I sat in Rachel’s living room, watching the morning news report. A panel of legal experts was discussing the unprecedented speed at which Sarah Sterling had dismantled Vance Logistics.
"It’s a masterclass in corporate and family litigation," the anchor declared. "Jessica Vance not only secured full custody of her daughter and an emergency freeze on the family's assets, but she has also effectively stripped the Vance matriarch of her entire empire."
Fiona walked into the living room holding her favorite stuffed rabbit, looking up at me with bright, happy eyes. The red mark on her cheek had almost completely faded.
"Mommy, TV?" she asked, pointing tiny finger at the screen.
I scooped her up into my lap, burying my face in her soft curls. "Just some bad people getting what they deserve, sweet girl," I whispered, kissing the top of her head.
My phone buzzed continuously on the coffee table. Reporters from CNN, Fox, and local tabloids were offering six-figure sums for an exclusive interview. Influencers and women's rights advocates were flooding my DMs with messages of solidarity and support.
Suddenly, my phone rang with an unknown number. I almost ignored it, but something made me swipe and answer.
"Jessica?"
It was Wendy. Her voice wasn't filled with the arrogant venom I was used to hearing. It sounded ancient, broken, and desperate.
"How did you get this number, Wendy?" I asked coldly.
"Please," she choked out, a sob cutting through her words. "Take everything. Take the houses, take the money, take the company. Just... drop the criminal charges against Luca and Marcus. They're my boys. Please. I'm begging you."
I looked at Fiona, who was happily coloring in a picture book beside me, completely safe, completely loved, completely free from the toxic shadow of the Vance family.
"When you raised your hand against my daughter," I said steadily, "you signed your family's death warrant. Enjoy the fall, Wendy. You built the cage yourself."

I hung up and blocked the number forever.
