Chapter 1 - The Weapon in the Video

The glow of my phone illuminated the dark guest bedroom where Fiona slept. My thumb hovered over the video sent by Kelly, Luca’s cousin.
I already knew what the slap looked like. I had felt the echo of it in my own bones. But as I pressed play and watched the second half of the clip, the blood froze in my veins.
It wasn't just Wendy’s cruel hand striking my two-year-old’s cheek. It was what happened right after.
As Fiona flinched and started to cry, Wendy didn’t just scold her. She leaned in closer, her voice captured sharply by the microphone on Kelly’s phone, hissing: *"Useless breed. Just like your mother. Next time, I’ll make sure you don't wake up."*
And Luca? Sitting right beside them, my husband didn't look up. He took a sip of his wine, completely unfazed by a grandmother threatening to murder his own child.
My phone buzzed violently in my hand. It was a text from Kelly.
*“Jessi. I know Aunt Wendy is toxic, and Luca is spineless. I took this video because I knew she’d cross a line eventually. Do what you have to do.”*
Kelly wasn't just a bystander; she was my inside woman. And she had just handed me a nuclear weapon.
By midnight, I had drafted a legal package that would dismantle the Vance family empire piece by piece. Wendy Vance was the matriarch of Vance Logistics, a multimillion-dollar shipping corporation. She ruled her company—and her family—with an iron fist. Luca was merely a puppet executive waiting for his inheritance.
And me? For three years, they thought I was a quiet, unassuming graphic designer from a working-class family whom Luca had "rescued."
They had no idea that my grandfather had built a legal empire before losing it, and that I had spent my entire youth studying corporate law and asset protection.
I didn't reply to Luca's barrage of text messages. Instead, I forwarded Kelly’s video to my divorce attorney, Marcus Vance’s worst nightmare: Sarah Sterling, a shark known as "The Executioner."
Along with the video, I attached three folders of evidence I had quietly accumulated over the last two years: corporate tax evasion by Vance Logistics, hidden offshore accounts held by Wendy, and proof that Luca had been embezzling company funds to pay off his secret gambling debts.
My phone rang at 1:15 AM. It was Sarah Sterling.
Her voice crackled over the line, dripping with predatory delight. *"Jessi, darling. Where did you get this? This isn't just a divorce case. This is a federal takedown. Do we want to ruin them slowly, or do you want to burn them to the ground by sunrise?"*
I looked at my sleeping daughter, the faint red mark still visible on her soft cheek.
May you like
"Burn it to the ground," I whispered. "Leave them with nothing."
