Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

By noon, the financial world of Vance Logistics was in freefall.

Sarah Sterling’s freeze order had hit the company’s primary bank accounts just as the morning stock market opened. By 12:30 PM, panic-selling had dropped Vance Logistics' stock by 22%.

I sat in a high-end downtown café across the street from the Vance corporate skyscraper, watching the news ticker scroll across the giant LED billboard.

*“BREAKING: Vance Logistics faces sudden asset freeze amid allegations of embezzlement and child endangerment involving matriarch Wendy Vance.”*

My phone buzzed. It was Luca. Desperation coated every syllable of his voice.

*"Jessi! Where are you? What did you do?! Mom is screaming, the board of directors is having an emergency meeting, and the police are at the corporate office asking questions about financial records! Please, honey, come home. Let's talk this out like a family."*

"We are talking, Luca," I replied calmly, stirring my iced coffee. "You’re talking. I’m listening to your empire crumble."

*"You think this is a joke?!"* he roared, his voice cracking. *"Mom said if you don't drop the charges and hand Fiona over to us by 2:00 PM, she’s going to use her connections to have you arrested for kidnapping your own child!"*

"Tell your mother she’s welcome to try," I said, and hung up.

An hour later, I walked through the glass double doors of Vance Logistics. I wasn't wearing my usual quiet, oversized sweaters. Today, I wore a tailored crimson pantsuit, towering black heels, and dark sunglasses. I looked less like a victimized housewife and more like an executioner stepping onto the battlefield.

Security guards who had previously ignored me or treated me like a nuisance now rushed forward, holding doors open, whispering nervously among themselves. The news had already leaked inside the building.

I bypassed the elevator and took the private executive stairs straight to the top-floor boardroom.

When I pushed the mahogany doors open, all eyes turned to me.

Wendy Vance sat at the head of the long conference table. Her hair was disheveled, her expensive Chanel jacket rumpled, and her face pale with fury. Luca sat to her right, trembling visibly, while Marcus stood behind her, sweating profusely.

"You!" Wendy shrieked, slamming her palms onto the table and standing up. "You ungrateful, low-class parasite! How dare you step foot in this building?!"

I didn't flinch. I walked slowly down the length of the table, my heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor, echoing in the dead silence of the room.

"Sit down, Wendy," I said, my voice cutting through the air like a razor blade. "Your throne has been repossessed."
