Chapter 7 - The Counterstrike

Daniel’s smear campaign lasted exactly twenty-four hours.
He had hired a low-rent public relations crisis manager—someone willing to work on credit—and flooded local blogs and social media with doctored medical claims and anonymous accusations. The narrative was predictable: Daniel Reed was an innocent, hardworking architect whose emotionally volatile, vengeful wife had sabotaged his business out of spite after their marriage broke down.
He thought the public would believe him. He forgot that in the digital age, receipts are indestructible.
At ten o’clock the following morning, Eleanor and I held a formal press briefing in the conference room of Campbell & Associates. We didn't invite gossip bloggers; we invited the senior investigative reporters from the city’s major dailies and the local CBS and NBC affiliates.
The room was packed with cameras, tripods, and microphones. I sat at the center of the table, dressed in a sharp, tailored ivory blazer, looking directly into the lenses. Beside me sat Marcus Vance and Eleanor.
"Good morning," Eleanor began, her voice commanding instant silence. "Over the past day, certain defamatory allegations have been circulated regarding Mrs. Emma Reed’s mental fitness and her role in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding Reed Architecture. We are here today to provide complete transparency."
Eleanor nodded toward Marcus, who pressed a button on a remote control. A massive projector screen lit up behind us.
"These," Eleanor announced, "are certified bank transcripts showing the systematic embezzlement of four point two million dollars from corporate and marital accounts by Daniel Reed, funneled directly into personal offshore accounts and luxury properties shared with Miss Olivia Bennett."
Flashbulbs exploded across the room.
"Furthermore," Marcus spoke up, leaning into the microphone, "we have forensic audio recordings recovered from the firm’s security servers. Daniel Reed systematically discussed how to fabricate clinical documentation regarding his wife’s health in order to strip her of parental rights and corporate equity."
Marcus clicked the remote.
Daniel’s voice filled the room, crisp, arrogant, and unmistakably cruel:
*"...Just make sure the psychiatrist writes up a preliminary note indicating severe emotional volatility. If Emma looks unstable on paper, the judge won't give her full custody, and she won't have the legal standing to challenge the restructuring of the firm. She’s pregnant, she’s hormonal—nobody will question it..."*
The journalists erupted in gasps. Pens scribbled furiously; cameras zoomed in on the visual evidence of Daniel’s fraud displayed on the screen.
I leaned forward toward the cluster of microphones. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't cry. My tone was calm, measured, and devastatingly clear.
"Daniel Reed wanted you to believe that I was crazy so you wouldn't notice that he was a criminal," I said. "He wanted to reduce the mother of his child to a footnote in his vanity. But a home built on stolen money and manufactured lies cannot stand. To every woman who has ever been told she is 'too emotional' when she demands the truth: do not let them rewrite your reality. The truth doesn't need to shout to be heard. It only needs to be seen."
I stood up, nodded politely to the press, and walked out of the room with Eleanor and Marcus, ignoring the storm of shouted questions from reporters who had just watched Daniel Reed’s entire life burn to the ground on live television.
By noon, the broadcast had gone viral. The social media campaign Daniel had launched turned on him like a tidal wave. The hashtag #StandWithEmma was trending across the region. Sponsors dropped Daniel’s affiliated projects within minutes.
